A group motivational intervention to support motivation for physical activity among adults in residential treatment for substance use disorders
OBJECTIVE: Physical activity (PA) may offer health benefits for individuals undergoing substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, yet relapse, comorbidities, and motivational challenges often hinder PA maintenance. This study assessed the impact of a motivational intervention aimed at increasing PA motivation and maintenance in a residential SUD treatment setting. METHODS AND MEASURES: This non-concurrent multiple-baseline N-of-1 study consisted of …
Social Identification as a Predictor of Mental Health and Wellbeing
Men’s Sheds offer promising sites for unique health promotion opportunities, and while prior work has identified potential mechanisms that may support wellbeing, these mechanisms are yet to be empirically clarified in the Men’s Shed context. This study investigated the relationships between engagement in Men’s Sheds, social identification, social connectedness, social support, and wellbeing outcomes in Men’s Shed members in Western Australia ( N …
What Makes a Thriving Mutual-Aid Membership Association? The Case of Men’s Sheds
Men’s Sheds are unique community-based mutual-aid not-for-profit membership organisations, which aim to use activities such as craftwork to improve men’s health. While the Men’s Sheds movement appears to be growing, with Sheds in Africa, Europe, Oceania and North America, there is limited understanding of what makes a thriving Shed or membership association more widely. This paper uses in-depth qualitative interviews with committee members of Men…
Erhard on recognition, revolution, and natural law
This paper provides a critical reconstruction of J. B. Erhard's account of recognition that locates it within the context of his revolutionary natural law theory. The first three sections lay out the foundations of Erhard's position. The fourth section outlines Erhard's response to the opponents of revolution and raises a problem for it. The fifth section argues that we can resolve this problem by drawing upon Erhard's account of failures of lega…
Emotional labor and emotional exhaustion in psychologists
The emotional exhaustion component of burnout is concerningly prevalent in psychologists providing psychotherapy. Emotional labor is a known contributor to burnout through the pathway of emotional dissonance and is beginning to develop attention in psychologist wellbeing literature. Although the relationship between emotional dissonance and emotional exhaustion in psychologists has been observed previously, constructs within an individual's locus…
Evaluation of an Assertive Management and Integrated Care Service for Frequent Emergency Department Attenders with Substance Use Disorders
Assertive management services can be effective in preventing hospital presentations and costs for frequent ED attenders with SUDs and improving client outcomes, representing an effective integrated health approach. The IMPACT service has since been refined and integrated into routine care across a number of hospitals in Sydney, Australia
Integrated management pathways for alcohol and drug clients into treatment (impact) service reduces emergency department visits
Introduction and Aims: People with substance use disorders (SUD) are over represented among frequent attenders to Emergency Departments (ED), however there have been few attempts to systematically respond to such individuals outside of hospital settings. This presentation will report on the final results of an assertive outreach case management program (IMPACT), aimed at frequent (≥5 within the past year) attenders with SUD presenting to two majo…

Mercury at Oak Ridge
Risk evaluations play an important role in environmental management, remediation and restoration. Yet when different agencies and groups evaluate risk, the objectives and methods may differ, leading to different conclusions, which can confuse managers, policy-makers and the public. In this paper, we examine two evaluations of the potential risk from mercury contamination deriving from the Y-12 facility at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Rese…
Discourse Constraints for Document Compression
Sentence compression holds promise for many applications ranging from summarization to subtitle generation. The task is typically performed on isolated sentences without taking the surrounding context into account, even though most applications would operate over entire documents. In this article we present a discourse-informed model which is capable of producing document compressions that are coherent and informative. Our model is inspired by th…
Fichte and Hegel on Recognition
In this paper I provide an interpretation of Hegel’s account of ‘recognition’ (Anerkennung) in the 1802-3 System of Ethical Life as a critique of Fichte’s account of recognition in the 1796-7 Foundations of Natural Right. In the first three sections of the paper I argue that Fichte’s account of recognition in the domain of right is not concerned with recognition as a moral attitude. I then turn, in section four, to a discussion of Hegel’s critiqu…
Civil Society Participation in the Decentralisation of Brazil's Water Resources
Decentralisation, the transfer of powers to a lower level of government, is thought to encourage more efficient and equitable management of natural resources. Participation of civil society organisations (CSOs) is considered critical to create positive outcomes of decentralisation. Here we examine aspects of civil society participation in decentralised management using the case of Brazil's water resources management. Several Brazilian states have…
International Migration in the Unece Region
The 1990s has been a turbulent decade for inter-national migration in the UNECE region. While recorded movements have declined in recent years in Western Europe, major questions surround the frequency of unrecorded and irregular migrations which many believe are steadily increasing in number, though the evidence is problematic. Central and Eastern Europe is characterised by short-term, short-distance, cross-border movement, most of which is forec…

New Europeans
A case is made for a cross‐national analysis of acquisition of citizenship by foreign residents in Europe, frequently regarded as a prime indicator of formal integration. After a brief review of theories and concepts and of legislation and policy, the article evaluates the quality of data on the subject and suggests how they may be improved and harmonised. Analysis of the main patterns and trends for the period from 1980 indicates that Europe has…
