    Open Access•Richard Macdonald•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2025•References: 29

This article examines the environmental controversy around the planning and construction of high-speed rail in the UK (HS2) to analyse the changing dynamics and mediation of intra-green contention. The study situates a protracted episode of contention staged on Twitter, focused on the damage and destruction of 108 ancient woodlands by the construction of HS2, in a longer event history initiated by the first UK public consultation on high-speed ra…

    Open Access•Richard L Macdonald, Richard Macdonald•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article is concerned with the ritually embedded character of open‐air cinema in Thailand. It draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Isaan and Bangkok and interviews with different actors within the ritual economy of open‐air cinema at shrines and temples. Outlining different ritual actions through which cinema is sponsored, it then focuses on a particular practice: pledging film screenings to spirits and deities at shrines. Looking at a specific…

    Richard Macdonald•ARTICLE•Photographies•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This article focuses on a form of online photo-sharing practice largely overlooked in recent literature: the sharing of personal collections of “old” analogue photographs retrieved from family albums, suitcases and cupboards. Recent scholarship on digital photography and online photo-sharing has argued that the widespread adoption of digital technologies and network infrastructures for image capture, storage, transmission and display have led to …

  • Digitization and Materiality: Researching Community Memory Practice Today

    Open Access•Richard L Macdonald, Richard Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Among the most deep-seated anxieties of the Internet age is the fear of technologically produced forgetting. Technology critics and sociologists of memory alike argue that daily exposure to overwhelming flows of information is undermining our ability to connect and synthesize past and present. Acknowledging the salience of these concerns our approach seeks to understand the contemporary conditions of collective memory practice in relation to proc…

  • Digital platforms and narrative exchange: Hidden constraints, emerging agency

    Open Access•Wilma Clark, N Couldry et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 11

It is well known that narrative exchange takes distinctive forms in the digital age. Less understood are the digitally based processes and infrastructures that support or constrain the wider exchange of narrative materials. This article reports on research in a UK sixth form college with ambitions to expand its students’ digital skills. Our approach was to identify the preconditions (sometimes, but often not, involving fully formed narrative agen…

  • Constructing a digital storycircle: Digital infrastructure and mutual recognition

Open Access•N Couldry, Richard Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2014•References: 3

Building on the principles of the digital storytelling movement, this article asks whether the narrative exchange within the ‘storycircles’ of storymakers created in face-to-face workshops can be further replicated by drawing on digital infrastructure in specific ways. It addresses this question by reporting on the successes and limitations of a five-stream project of funded action research with partners in north-west England that explored the co…

Open Access•May Adadol Ingawanij, Richard Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•South East Asia Research•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 3

The Thai film, The Iron Ladies, is the story of a gay, lesbian and transsexual volleyball team that surprises everyone by winning the Thai national championship. It was a huge commercial success when it first appeared in Thailand in 2000; and following a further enthusiastic reception at the 2000 London Film Festival, it became the first Thai film to be commercially distributed in the UK. But when the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), a venue…

The membership was predominantly under 35 years of age and married, almost entirely Caucasian, disproportionately concentrated in the higher education and income categories, and not committed to religion. Asked to rate the importance of various reasons …
