  • Mapping domestic workers’ organizing globally

    Open Access•Helen Schwenken, Claire Hobden•ARTICLE•Atlánticas Revista Internacional…•2021

Domestic workers face challenges for organizing, e.g. decentralization of the workforce, nature of the employment relationship. This article analyses, based on a multiple country-comparison, how domestic workers organize despite constrictions. We identify three forms of organizing: the trade union model and the association model (Shireen Ally). We propose, though, an additional third model, the ‘hybrid type’: domestic workers organize ‘amongst th…

  • Introduction: Inclusive solidarity and citizenship along migratory routes in Europe and the Americas

    Helge Schwiertz, Helen Schwenken•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2020•Cited by: 36•References: 50

In this special issue, we link non-essentialist concepts of solidarity and citizenship to migration in different empirical contexts. We analyse how civil society initiatives renegotiate societal structures in solidarity with people on the move, noncitizens and racialized individuals, and in doing so we contribute to current debates about citizenship and solidarity. Focusing on solidarity among members of the so-called ‘majority society’ in Europe…

  • Mobilizing for safe passages and escape aid: Challenging the 'Asylum Paradox' Between Active and Activist Citizenship, Humanitarianism and Solidarity

    Helge Schwiertz, Helen Schwenken•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2020•Cited by: 15•References: 32

The ‘asylum paradox’ is a pivotal feature of refugee politics in the Global North: In order to effectively claim and obtain refugee rights, refugees are forced to cross borders illegally because of the lack of legal entry options. As a result, access to refugee protection has become a controversial issue, and civil society initiatives have begun mobilizing people for safe passage and escape aid. This paper analyses a range of such practices in Ge…

Labour emigration is not merely the business of states and governmental policies, but comes with a range of wider societal practices. This includes the production of – and contestation over – the ‘ideal migrant subject’. This paper examines the complex interplay of actors and practices involved in migrant subject‐making processes paying close attention to the pre‐employment temporary labour migration process step by step from screening, recruitme…

  • The EU Should Talk to Germany” Transnational Legal Consciousness as a Rights Claiming Tool among Undocumented Migrants

    Open Access•Helen Schwenken•ARTICLE•International Migration•2013•Cited by: 15•References: 6

Migrants must often negotiate their rights while being hampered by their precarious resident status, within contexts where the overlap of migration, welfare, labour and gender regimes lead to incoherent and contradictory institutional set‐ups that hinder their claiming of rights. The analysis of the legal consciousness of undocumented migrants in Germany reveals a complex set of orientations. On some occasions they waive their rights, accepting l…

  • Masking, Blurring, Replacing: Can the Undocumented Migrant Have a Face in Film?

Open Access•Olaf Berg, Helen Schwenken•CHAPTER•Images of Illegalized Immigration•2010

The question whether the undocumented migrant can have a face in film is at first glance not a question of aesthetics. It is their social and legal condition, not aesthetics, which prevent undocumented migrants from showing their face. But the question becomes more complex if we take into account, that films are a part of the migration regime. It works like a vicious circle: The migration regime forces undocumented migrants to conceal their face.…
