Measuring rural and urban consciousness in Europe
It is the task of political psychology to examine political behaviour from a psychological or socio-psychological perspective. Its topics include the analysis of political elites, especially their personalities, motives and actions, political leadership, foreign policy decision-making processes, international and ethnic conflicts and their pacification, terrorism, the conditions of collective action, group behaviour, political socialisation and a…
Institutions, political attitudes or personal values? A multilevel investigation into the origins of police legitimacy in Europe
The extent to which democratic regimes warrant the rule of law is considered to be vital for the quality of democracy. Thus, the perceived trustworthiness of the police, as the executive agency of the legal system, is attributed a significant importance. Notwithstanding, the bulk of empirical studies concerned with political support has so far not focused on trust in the police in its own right but rather as an ingredient of political trust which…

Social and Political Trust
During recent years, empirical trust research has significantly advanced our understanding about the interdependencies of social and political trust. This progress can mostly be attributed to major improvements of measurement instruments in survey research. Research on the causes of both forms of trust have examined the top-down approach of trust building, which places importance on fair and impartial political institutions, such as the police an…

Social structure and political trust in Europe: Mapping contextual preconditions of a relational concept
Any political system strives for stability. Authoritarian regimes revert to manifold means such as sanctions, oppression or persecution in order to ensure that subjects would not revolt. The stability of democratic regimes, by contrast, strongly depends on citizens’ system support. When institutions and political actors within democratic regimes are perceived to be trustworthy, citizens are, as a consequence, more willing to obey by the laws, bec…

Three forms of trust and their association
This article investigates the relationships between particular social trust, general social trust, and political trust and tests a variety of political, social-psychological, and social capital theories of them. This sort of research has not been carried out before because until the World Values Survey of 2005–07 there has been, to our knowledge, no comparative survey that includes measures of particular and other forms of trust. The new data cha…
Introduction: Civicness, Equality, and Democracy-A "Dark Side" of Social Capital
Debates about social capital usually focus on its presumed positive consequences. Although this expectation has been corroborated empirically, in many instances some less benign consequences of social capital have also been uncovered. Several explanations for the emergence and consequences of these "dark sides" of social capital are briefly presented here and, subsequently, put to empirical testing. The contributors to this issue of American Beha…
Social Capital and Norms of Citizenship: An Ambiguous Relationship
From a theoretical viewpoint, the consequences of social capital for norms of citizenship are usually perceived as benign. However, empirical evidence indicates that its impact may be detrimental. To investigate this phenomenon further, this article examines the specific nature of the relationships among social involvement, social trust, and four different types of norms of citizenship. Social capital acts on these norms in two different ways. Fi…

Social Trust and Attitudes Toward Democracy
In spite of the great importance attached by social capital theory to the role of social trust in maintaining stable and effective democracy, research has produced rather weak and mixed support for the idea that the socially trusting individuals tend to be politically trusting, and the weight of evidence suggests either a weak or insignificant relationship between social and political trust. The present work, however, reports robust and statistic…
Applying The Concepts of Bonding and Bridging Social Capital to Empirical Research
This article explores the differing potential of voluntary associations to build bonding and bridging social capital. Our argument is that voluntary associations do not always have the same effects, and thus that there is a need for further theoretical and empirical differentiation. Using data from a representative German population study carried out in June 2001 and coordinated by the Citizenship, Involvement, Democracy project, we conduct an em…
