Unpacking GAI-induced academic emotions
Ambivalent threads of repair
This article draws out the spaces and practices through which embodied knowledge of Yao embroidery is being transmitted – and transformed – in a Yao ethnic minority boarding school in south China. Yao embroidery is an indigenous folk craft traditionally passed down the female line of the Yao ethnic group. Whilst cultural geographers have turned to explore the continuation of craft practices in an affirmative register, we want to sound a more ambi…
Late-Night Talk Radio in Post-Mao China
The late-night talk radio show has been a feature of the Chinese urban radio soundscape for more than three decades. Although such shows have declined in popularity since the late 2000s, in recent years they have been revived in digital format. Audio programs under the tag of “night listening” have blossomed in the Chinese digital space. Late-night talk radio shows are easily accessible on audio platforms. An analysis of the evolution of late-nig…
Scale-based screening and assessment of age-related frailty
As the population ages, the prevalence of age-related frailty increases sharply, which increases the risk of poor health status of older adults, such as disability, falls, hospitalization, and death. Across the globe, frailty is moving toward the forefront of health and medical research. Currently, frailty is believed to be preventable and reversible, so the early identification of frailty is critical. However, there are neither precise biomarker…

A prosaic state? Development visions, banal state encounters and indigenous politics in south-west China
This article examines state–society relations expressed in the politics of land in Lugu Lake, south-west China, inhabited by an ethnic group called Mosuo. Since the 1980s, Mosuo people have spearheaded successive waves of construction booms in the lakeshore lands to enliven a grassroots tourism economy, while economic empowerment has played a key role in reviving traditional household organization, familial relations and cultural practices. Howev…

Sounds of a migrant city
The cultural dimension has been considered as an important site in exploring Chinese citizenship. This article examines cultural citizenship-making practices with a focus on rural-urban migrants and local radio. Since the opening-up reforms of 1979, Shenzhen, located in southeast China, has attracted many migrant workers and has grown into a prosperous migrant city. As such, Shenzhen provides a compelling case study in examining the relationship …
Implicit measure of suicidal ideation in patients with depression
The death/suicide implicit association test (IAT) may be more resilient to accurately assess suicide risk than self-reports. We examined the IAT in 130 patients with depression and 125 healthy controls, along with self-reported suicidal ideation. IAT could differentiate patients with suicide attempts from patients without suicide attempts and controls. IAT measures were significantly correlated to explicit suicidal ideation and clinical symptoms …
Development at the Edge of Difference
This paper rethinks the relationships between capitalist development in indigenous places and the fabric of local differences and specificities. It first develops a critical appraisal of the celebration of ethnic identities, local agency and indigenous knowledge in existing literatures. It suggests that, based on such insights, we can further envision the possibility of questioning and problematising the ontology and concept of the capitalist eco…

Radio listening and the changing formations of the public in China
As a sound medium which once enjoyed a dominant status in Mao-era China, radio has undergone tremendous transformation over the past several decades. Throughout the history from socialist era to post-Mao-era China, radio has much to tell about listening as a social practice and about the formation of the public. This article asks how radio listening was defined and managed as a form of public engagement at different historical stages in Chinese C…

My health is my own business’
The withdrawal of state funding from public health care in post-Mao China has resulted in individuals taking responsibility for their own health. In this article, we first trace the emergence and development of the main health-related advice genres on radio and television during the latter half of the reform era (from the 1990s onwards). We then discuss the content, form and themes of health information and advice, first on radio and then on tele…
