  • An Exploration of Parameter Duality in Statistical Inference

    Open Access•Sarah Thornton, Minge Xie•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2024•References: 10

Well-known debates among statistical inferential paradigms emerge from conflicting views on the notion of probability. One dominant view understands probability as a representation of sampling variability; another prominent view understands probability as a measure of belief. The former generally describes model parameters as fixed values, in contrast to the latter. We propose that there are actually two versions of a parameter within both paradi…

  • Screening for HIV-related neurocognitive impairment in clinical practice

    T J Barber, TJ Barber et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2014

With increasingly successful management of HIV, focus has shifted away from AIDS-related complications to other chronic co-morbidities. For HIV-related cognitive problems, the true aetiopathogenesis and epidemiology remains unclear. Rather than a systematic review, this paper presents the challenges and the opportunities we faced in establishing our own clinical service. Papers were identified using Pubmed and the terms "screening", "HIV" and "ne…

  • Rethinking 'Moral Panic' for Multi-Mediated Social Worlds

    A Mcrobbie, Sarah Thornton et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•1995•Cited by: 217•References: 1

It is now over twenty years since the well-established sociology of deviance along with the emergent sociology of mass media produced the concept of 'moral panic'. The various studies of youth culture, drugtakers and the media reaction to these and other phenomena produced some of the most important work in post-war British sociology. This article argues that it is now time that every stage in the process of constructing a moral panic, as well as…

  • Strategies for reconstructing the popular past

    Open Access•Sarah Thornton•ARTICLE•Popular Music•1990•Cited by: 10•References: 5

One of the things that distinguishes music from other forms of popular culture is that its consumption is accompanied by so much comment. Neither TV nor film, for instance, has accrued the volume, diversity or specialisation of the books and magazines devoted to music and read by people without a professional investment. This literature poses particular problems for historians of rock'n'roll, rock and pop. What are its main methods of ordering th…
