Negotiating Female Morality: Place, ideology and agency in the Red River Colony
By 1850 British women had settled in the Red River colony, a British outpost in what became the province of Manitoba, Canada, and where the Hudson’s Bay Company established fur trading posts. Through an analysis of documents concerning two unconnected lawsuits involving Countryborn women, it is possible to glean some understanding of how British women became agents of colonialism. Company authorities envisaged that White women would establish hou…
Contingent Work, Disrupted Lives: Labour and Community in the New Rural Economy
Contingent Work, Disrupted Lives examines the repercussions of economic globalization on several manufacturing-dependent rural communities in Canada. Foregrounding a distinct interest in the 'grassroots' effects of such contemporary corporate strategies as plant closures and downsizing, authors Anthony Winson and Belinda Leach consider the impact of this restructuring on the residents of various communities. The authors argue that the new rural e…

Cheap Wage Labour: Race and Gender in the Fisheries of British Columbia
Cheap Wage Labour is the first analysis of shore work and shoreworkers in British Columbia from the 1860s to the mid-1980s. Muszynski provides an interpretation of events that led to the creation of a cheap wage labour force of shoreworkers, their organization within the framework of the fishermen's union (UFAWU), and, as a consequence, the steady decline of their numbers until today they represent only a small portion of the labour force. She lo…

A Philosophy for a Fair Society
With the eclipse of the New Right, politicians now admit that society is in crisis. Something must be done, but, explain the authors, governments will fail again unless they shake off the economic orthodoxy which is now one of the problems rather than the means to a solution. This book investigates the roots of the problem, both historically and theoretically. Dr Michael Hudson draws on archaeology and history, from Bronze-Age Mesopotamia through…
Crisis in rural life and crisis in thinking: Directions for critical research
Women's Work and Chicano Families, Cannery Workers of the Santa Clara Valley
no claims that my findings can be applied to all Chicanos.I hope, however, that my perspective will contribute to the understanding of Chicana workers in other situations and that it will stimulate more detailed observations on Chicano families in the future.I also hope my work will be useful in comparative research on the millions of part-time and seasonal non-Chicana women workers. This book owes much to the help and emotional support I received…
Class Formation and Class Consciousness: The Making of Shoreworkers in the BC Fishing Industry
Harry Braverman's Labor and Monopoly Capital renewed interest in Marxist studies of the labour process and the nature of the proletariat and its potential in class struggle
