The discourse of anti-Fascism and food protest in underground women’s publications: Italy and France during the Second World War
The article discusses the practice of food protest within the Resistance in both Italy and France. In both countries, women’s groups connected to left-wing political movements, in particular those within the Communist Party orbit, were behind the organization of these protests. Through a reading of the French and Italian women’s underground press, the article examines the anti-Fascist discourse around food demonstrations. It sheds light on a prac…
Roundtable: Rod Kedward and his legacy
Professor Harry Roderick Kedward (1937–2023), universally known as Rod Kedward, is best known for his groundbreaking studies of the French Resistance, discussed in diverse ways by several contributors to this roundtable.1 Yet as Chris Warne emphasizes below, Rod’s interests extended in time and space well beyond the Second World War. Indeed, to fully comprehend Rod, it is important to understand him as a soixante-huitard—close witness to many of …
Redefining Resistance: Women's Activism in Wartime France
Partisanes and Gender Politics in Vichy France
This chapter examines the role of women in armed combat, a specific case that illustrates both the flexibility and resilience of gender roles in an area where men and women worked together. Chemist France Bloch-Serazin provided raw materials from her laboratory and manufactured explosives for partisan fighters. Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy became commander-in-chief of die unified Forces frangaises de I'interieur in the Ile-de-France. Roderick Kedward…
On vit mal: F ood S hortages and P opular C ulture in O ccupied F rance , 1940–1944
Of all the occupied European countries of the Second World War, France was among the most severely affected by food shortages. Wartime shortages required shifting from a culture of abundance to a culture of invention. In this article, we examine the food supply problem, the state's efforts to provision the population, and the effects of scarcity on the culture of everyday life. From the defeat in June 1940 to liberation in the second half of 1944…
Women's studies, gender studies.
Women's Studies, Gender Studies: Le contexte americain
The politics of food and gender in occupied Paris
This article examines the origins, development and meaning of women's mobilisation around problems of food scarcity and supply during the Occupation. Memoirs, fiction and testimony of the war years show that food issues dominated the daily life of French men and women. Police and protesters saw the struggle for bread as distinctly a women's issue, but for different sets of reasons. How did defining food protest as ‘female’ serve the political age…

Pollard Miranda, Reign of Virtue: Mobilizing Gender in Vichy France
Claire HSU Accomando, Love and Rutabaga: A Remembrance of the War Years, New York, St. Martin’s Press, 1993, 214 p
