  • Against the World

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2025

On the eve of World War I, the Hungarian feminist Rosika Schwimmer triumphantly hosted an international congress of women's suffrage activists in Budapest. A decade later, Schwimmer was a stateless refugee without a passport. Her fate was emblematic of the way the world changed after 1914. Prewar enthusiasm for the free movement of goods, ideas, and people around the world shriveled. Across Europe and the United States, support for internationali…

Open Access•Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

In the aftermath of the First World War, Hungary experienced a liberal revolution, a Communist coup, foreign invasion, a rightist counterrevolution, and the loss of some two-thirds of its former territory via the Treaty of Trianon. Judith Szapor’s book Hungarian Women’s Activism in the Wake of the First World War: From Rights to Revanche is the first to examine the politicization of Hungarian women during this tumultuous period. Szapor concentrat…

  • Telling Lies, Making Truth

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•BOOK•Curtain of lies•2017

This chapter analyzes the political function of show trials in Eastern Europe. It argues that while show trials told lies, their primary purpose was to reveal new truths about the Cold War world to their East European audiences. Show trials described a world where the peace-loving socialist East was continually menaced by the imperialist West, which sent spies and saboteurs to wreck its economic development and plotted to destroy it in a nuclear …

  • The Fight for Peace

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•BOOK•Curtain of lies•2017

This chapter examines the Communist-led peace movement and analyzes its propaganda. Like show trials, the peace movement spread a similar set of messages around the Soviet bloc and throughout the world. Unlike the show trials, peace discourse was primarily concerned with revealing the truth of the warmongering West. For example, peace activists detailed American war crimes in Korea and exposed American racist policies at home. Within Eastern Euro…

  • Curtain of Lies

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•BOOK•Curtain of lies•2017

'Curtain of Lies' examines the role of truth in the political culture of the Cold War by looking at Eastern Europe during the period from 1948-1956. It examines how actors on both sides of the Iron Curtain tried to delineate the 'truth' of Eastern Europe and how this worked to set the parameters of knowledge about the region

  • Democracy and Its Limits

    Open Access•Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2002•References: 4

On 28 October 1918, a group of Czech nationalists stood on the steps of the Obecni Dům (Municipal House) in Prague and proclaimed their independence from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, allying themselves with the new state of Czechoslovakia. Their declaration marked the beginning of a new era in the Czech lands, one in which Czechs, as the majority nation, hoped to redefine the terms of political discourse. The new Czechoslovak Republic, its Czec…

  • La politique de la personne

    Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•ARTICLE•Clio•2000•References: 5
