  • Grey’s Anatomy and Covid-19: A Conversation

Open Access•Catherine Bernard, Sarah Hatchuel et al.•ARTICLE•TV/Series•2026

This conversation examines how Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 2005-), one of television’s longest-running medical dramas, addressed the Covid-19 pandemic in its seventeenth season (2020-2021). As scholars specializing in television studies, American history and anglophone literature, but also as fans, we discuss the use of melodramatic conventions and long-form seriality to process collective trauma during the pandemic. The discussion analyzes the season’s…

    Open Access•Catherine Bernard•ARTICLE•COnTEXTES.

  • Contemporary Art’s Thanatic Work: Re-embodying the (Absent) Migrant Body

    Catherine Bernard•ARTICLE•Interventions•2024

Contemporary art has insistently turned to the experience of migration with a view to making us see, and possibly to making us indirectly experience and reflect on the embodied politics of migration. The documentary mode has featured prominently in art’s attempt at accounting for the reality of global migration. Other strategies have privileged a combination of allegory and empiricist experientiality, artists thus aiming at triggering an embodied…

  • Vibrant Allegories: Questioning Immunity with Ali Smith’s Seasonal Quartet (2016–2020)

    Open Access•Catherine Bernard•ARTICLE•Miranda•2020

Imagining new curatorial approaches to revisit Francis Bacon's work offers a challenge in more than one way, maybe all the more so when the exhibition is thought through for a foreign public. Bacon en toutes lettres, on view at The Centre Pompidou in the Autumn of 2019 and early weeks of 2020 was meant to be one of the highlights of Paris' artistic season-a season that will no doubt remain one of the most stimulating ones in recent years. When el…

  • In the Turbine of Experimentation: Tate Modern and the New (?) Rationale of Collective Performance

    Open Access•Catherine Bernard•ARTICLE•Angles•2018

Artistic experimentation, as well as the concepts elaborated to define it, have undergone considerable changes since the age of the avant-gardes and yet experimentation still retains some of its critical purchase. The present article focuses on recent experimentations in the field of installation and performance art and on the way these works may enlighten us on the kind of critical leverage offered by aesthetic experimentation in its complex and…

  • Christopher Nolan’s Inception: Spectacular speculations

    Catherine Bernard•ARTICLE•Screen•2017

Hollywood has never ceased revisiting its own visual language. With the globalization of visual culture, this re-visioning necessarily implies that we look at Hollywood from decentred perspectives that reveal how Hollywood’s visual idiom is part of a shifting, hybrid culture made of the structural experimentations of video art, of manga and video games culture. Such visual globalization also implies we reread Hollywood from the point of view of c…

  • Writing Capital, or, John Lanchester’s Debt to Realism

  • When the real matters: Interpreting the visual with Catherine Belsey

    Catherine Bernard•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2010

Focusing on Catherine Belsey's interest in understanding the intimate link of visual perception with the Lacanian real, this article traces the evolution of her interpretation of visual art from her initial allegorical approach to visual language to her engagement with contemporary art. So doing, it also focuses on the way contemporary art dislocates and defamiliarises the gaze. Turning to artists who also feature in Culture and the Real – especi…
