Economic and fiscal impacts of waste and non-waste development in rural United States
This paper investigates the differences in the economic and fiscal impacts between communities, and their respective counties, which had experienced economic development from the siting and operation of waste processing and disposal facilities, versus those that had experienced economic development from other types of retail, wholesale distribution, or manufacturing businesses. These communities and their respective counties are compared and cont…
Waste facility experience and perceptions of waste-related health and safety risks
Based on ecological theory, we hypothesize that positive experience with waste facility siting and storage will reduce the perceived health and safety risks associated with waste sites. Evidence is presented from data collected in 15 communities in the states of Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Colorado. Seven of these communities are hosting or were potential sites for hazardous waste facilities, four were the sites of other types of rural i…
Support for Waste Facility Siting: Differences between Community Leaders and Residents
Decisions regarding hazardous waste facility siting are now open to extensive public debate. Efforts on the part of public officials and private companies to site waste management facilities have been thwarted by public opposition. Using survey data from leaders and residents in communities which are hosting or siting facilities, this study examines their sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, levels of trust, perceptions of risk, perceptio…

Socioeconomic impact of the conservation reserve program in North Dakota
The short‐run economic impacts of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in North Dakota are estimated by using an input‐output model together with results from a statewide survey of CRP participants. Net direct reductions in production expenditures and household income resulting from the program totaled $55 million, with about 62 percent of the effect occurring in the retail sector. The total impact of the program is about $141 million, or only …
Impacts of the Farm Financial Crisis of the 1980s on Resources and Poverty in Agriculturally Dependent Counties in the United States
The farm financial crisis of the 1980s has had a major effect on agriculturally dependent areas in the United States. The crisis has resulted in a large proportion of producers leaving agriculture, in a substantial decline in the number of rural businesses, and in the support for rural service bases. Although extensively analyzed, the crisis' impacts on resources and poverty have not been adequately evaluated. This paper examines such impacts usin…
An assessment of the accuracy of a regional economic-demographic projection model
A large number of regional economic-demographic projection models have been developed but their accuracy has seldom been evaluated. This article examines the accuracy of one such model in projecting total populations for 1980, using 1970 base data, for 106 counties and 553 places in two states. Comparisons of the model’s projections to 1980 Census counts reveal mean percentage absolute differences of 10 percent for counties and 14 percent for pla…
