  • Fragile Hands and the True Life: Robert Linhart and L’Établi, Then and Now

    Donald Reid•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2025

Robert Linhart was a leader of the French Maoists and an analyst of Lenin's theory and practice during the 1968 years. He is best known for his account of working in a French automobile factory in 1968-1969, L'Établi, published in 1978. This essay analyzes what he brought to this experience and what he took from it. Mathias Gokalp adapted L'Établi for a new audience in a film released in 2023. Linhart's story belongs to a particular political and…

  • Ève Meuret-Campfort, Lutter “comme les mecs”. Le genre du militantisme ouvrier dans une usine de femmes: Vulaines-sur-Seine, Éditions du Croquant, 2021

    Donald Reid•ARTICLE•Clio•2023

  • Holocaust denial, Le Vicaire , and the absent presence of Nadine Fresco and Paul Rassinier in Jorge Semprún's La Montagne blanche

    Open Access•Donald Reid•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2022•References: 1

The importance to Jorge Semprún of confronting Holocaust denial in Vichy Syndrome France is not central to analyses that have been done of La Montagne blanche. To detect it, we must do what Semprún never stops asking readers to do: visit the external worlds to which his text directs us and reread his corpus so as to return with new insights and questions to pose to the text at hand. Holocaust denial is an erasure. La Montagne blanche draws our at…

  • L'écriture et le parti: Jorge Semprún's Lasting Experience of Communism

    Donald Reid•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2022

Do militants expelled from the Communist Party ever leave it behind? Jorge Semprún was a Communist resister captured and sent to Buchenwald, where he worked in the sui generis Communist organization there. He spent almost two decades in the party, half of those years organizing the Communist underground in Franco's Spain. Expelled in 1964, he became an anti-Communist who held on to what he valued as a Communist at Buchenwald and in the undergroun…

  • Implications of Zoonoses From Hunting and Use of Wildlife in North American Arctic and Boreal Biomes: Pandemic Potential, Monitoring, and Mitigation

Open Access•Lucy Keatts, Martin D Robards et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has re-focused attention on mechanisms that lead to zoonotic disease spillover and spread. Commercial wildlife trade, and associated markets, are recognized mechanisms for zoonotic disease emergence, resulting in a growing global conversation around reducing human disease risks from spillover associated with hunting, trade, and consumption of wild animals. These discussions are especially relevant to people who rely on harve…

We present a comprehensive overview of lemming monitoring and research activities, and assess recent trends in lemming abundance across the circumpolar Arctic. Since 2000, lemmings have been monitored at 49 sites of which 38 are still active. The sites were not evenly distributed with notably Russia and high Arctic Canada underrepresente…

  • Male primary school teachers, masculinity and identity work in regional Australia

This paper reports on the experiences of male primary school teachers in regional Australia. Drawing on 53 open-ended survey responses and interviews undertaken with five male teachers in Tasmania, the paper analyses their perspectives of their work and roles, and the additional labour of ‘career identity work’ through sport. For the men in this study, these additional roles find their antecedents in particular constructions of hegemonic masculin…

Dominique Manotti’s novels are informed by her experiences before she adopted this pen name and began writing fiction. As an instructor at Vincennes, a union leader and a militant with Les Cahiers de mai, Marie-Noëlle Thibault practised forms of political action aimed at empowering students and workers. She saw the possibilities for social change these promoted lost with the transformation of France during the presidency of François Mitterrand. T…

An examination of American representations of the Resistance since World War II in American press and film reveals that they have evolved according to French−American relations and American attitudes towards France and the French people. Admired during the war for forms of civilian resistance absent in recent American history, resisters re-emerged for American New Left readers of existentialism as models of engagement. However, in the ensuing con…

In recent years paternalism has become one of the most discussed concepts in social history. While historians of women invoke paternalism and patriarchy to help explain relations of male domination, Marxist historians have found paternalism useful in expanding their analyses of class consciousness. Eugene Genovese organized his interpretation of slavery in the American south around paternalism. For E. P. Thompson, the breakdown of the ideology an…

    Donald Reid•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2003•Cited by: 1

Marc Bloch's L'E ́trange De ́faite is a fundamental text of the French Resistance, a narrative about the will and means to resist in a society that seemed to have defeated itself. Bloch's belief that resistance began with a critique of French social and political culture made L'E ́trange De ́faite a therapeutic work for Bloch himself, as he wrote it in 1940, and for the French when it was first published in 1946. The core of the work is Bloch's e…
