The Philosophy of Camus: Through a Kierkegaardian Lens
Although Albert Camus is recognized as an important novelist and political commentator, he is often still underrated as a philosopher. This study, focusing on Camus's explicitly philosophical writings, provides a detailed examination of his intellectual development, and argues that his work constitutes a coherent, carefully argued meditation on central philosophical themes. A systematic comparison of Camus with Søren Kierkegaard provides an inter…

Joy as Presence: Reflections on Kierkegaard and Temporality
Kierkegaard’s 1849 Discourses on The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air , place great emphasis on joy as a state in which one is present to oneself through living in the present moment. But this seems to conflict with the emphasis in Kierkegaard’s nearly contemporary The Sickness Unto Death on temporality as an essential aspect of human existence, and on the need to synthesize temporality and eternity in order to avoid despair. The two wor…
Utility of electronic patient records in primary care for stroke secondary prevention trials
Electronic patient records have potential for evaluation of outcomes in pragmatic trials of stroke secondary prevention. Stroke prevention interventions in primary care remain suboptimal but important reductions in vascular risk factor values were observed following stroke. Better recording of lifestyle factors in the GPRD has the potential to expand the scope of the GPRD for health care research and practice

Kierkegaard on Patience and the Temporality of the Self: The Virtues of a Being in Time
This paper examines Kierkegaard's discussion of patience in some of his Upbuilding Discourses , and its connection with his understanding of the nature of selfhood as it appears both in the Discourses and in The Sickness unto Death . That understanding stresses that selfhood is not simply given, but is a task to be achieved—although a task that can only be achieved by the self that is formed in the process of undertaking it. For Kierkegaard, an a…

Preventable Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke Amongst Ethnic Groups in London
These differences in risk factors may partially explain the high stroke mortality rates in black Caribbeans and black Africans compared to whites. There was little difference in prevalence of these risk factors between black Caribbean and black African groups. Specific strategies targeted to each ethnic group need to be developed to reduce risk factors
Two Types of Externalism
A contrast is drawn between two types of externalism, one based on ideas of Wittgenstein, the other on arguments from Putnam. Gregory McCulloch’s attempt to combine the two types is then examined and criticized. Putnamian externalism is ambiguous. It can be interpreted either as the empirical claim that we give priority to scientific as opposed to other forms of discourse, or as a metaphysical claim that our language attempts to conform to the st…
