  • Global Media Events

    Françoise Papa•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The Beijing Olympic Games have undoubtedly reinforced the image of China as a global superpower in politics, economics and sport. The Chinese hosting of the Olympics, a complex global event, has demonstrated its ability to compete at all levels with the West. Olympic success, however, impressive as it has been, is not enough to ease the anxieties of the West with its fundamental commitment to the ideals of democracy about China. Chinese soft powe…

  • France

Françoise Papa•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2010

This paper focuses on the French media coverage of the Beijing Olympic games. Based on the analysis of a set of themes, this article points the fact that most of the French media described the Beijing games as ‘huge’ games; however, their feelings remained ambivalent. Indeed, French people experienced the Beijing Olympic Games in a particular context, which significantly influenced their vision of the event. The Beijing Olympics were an indisputa…

Françoise Papa•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2010•Cited by: 1

The Olympic torch relay was a prelude to the Beijing games and, as a symbol of these games, it experienced many vicissitudes since its lighting in Olympia. Designed by the organizers of the games as a global media event, the torch relay rapidly crystallized the criticism towards the Chinese regime. The Paris stop was, indeed, highly chaotic: many incidents occurred which showed primarily the hostility of the French public. Moreover, these inciden…

  • ICT's and sustainable development

Open Access•Françoise Papa, Laurent Collet et al.•ARTICLE•Revue de géographie alpine•2006

The development of ICT's and their associated uses raises the question as to how these can tie in with the notion of sustainable development. Although the most common approach consists in examining the possible impacts of ICT development in economic, social and environmental terms, the ability of information processing and communication technologies to be integrated within these three dimensions has still to be explored. Taking the notion of terr…
