Differential psychophysiological responses associated with decision-making in children from different socioeconomic backgrounds
This study examined how socioeconomic status (SES) influences on decision-making processing. The roles of anticipatory/outcome-related cardiac activity and awareness of task contingencies were also assessed. One hundred twelve children (M age = 5.83, SDage = 0.32; 52.7% female, 51.8% low-SES; data collected October–December 2018 and April–December 2019) performed the Children's Gambling Task, while heart rate activity was recorded. Awareness of g…
Socioeconomic status differences in children’s affective decision-making
Future-oriented decision-making is an important adaptive behavior. In the present study, we examined whether decision-making varies as a function of socioeconomic status (SES) using the Children's Gambling task (CGT). We administered the CGT to 227 children (49% female, 48% low SES) between the ages of 5 and 7 years. After completing the CGT, we assessed children's knowledge of the reward/loss contingencies. Data analysis was conducted through mu…
Susu
Susu, a common way of saving money in the majority of developing countries, has migrated to developed nations. Originating in the 18th century in Ghana and Nigeria, susu is an indigenous method of microfinance, benefiting poor and minority groups. Significantly, susu relies on social capital as collateral, enhancing solidarity and building community. When American public assistance programs deny benefits to immigrants, susu becomes an important s…

Optimism, coping, psychological distress, and high-risk sexual behavior among men at risk for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (Aids)
In a cohort of gay men responding to the threat of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), dispositional optimism was associated with less distress, less avoidant coping, positive attitudes as a coping strategy, and fewer AIDS-related concerns. Men who knew they were seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were significantly more optimistic about not developing AIDS than men who knew they were seronegative for HIV. This AIDS-specif…
An American Writer
When I left California it was warm. The plane headed east, against the grain of America, into the dark. Nevada. Utah. Long shadows over Utah. Deep purple wells in the Rockies which seemed inverted afternoons. The Asian businessman on the airplane borrowed my newspaper for a time. The stewardess, a black woman, brought us dinner. In Hart ford, Connecticut, the blond lady at the Avis counter looked at me through green eyes. From where? Poland? Sco…
