  • Long start strategy in high-intensity interval training in Rugby Union Academy players

Open Access•Loïc Louit, Virgile Merlen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Introduction High-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols with varied parameters have been investigated to optimise the time spent at high levels of oxygen uptake. However, to date, the physiological and perceptual responses to a long-start approach (i.e., longer initial work phases followed by shorter subsequent phases) have not been investigated. The aim of the study was to compare external load, physiological responses, and rating of perc…

  • Heterogeneity in Agent-Based Models

    Open Access•Deborah Olukan, J R Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2026

Agent-based models are flexible tools that allow modellers to capture heterogeneity in agent attributes, characteristics, and behaviours. In this paper, heterogeneity is defined as agent granularity, referring to the level of detail used to describe agent attributes, behaviours, interaction processes, and decision-making rules. However, the increased complexity associated with greater levels of heterogeneity, and hence more parameters, can make the…

What does it mean to teach American studies in UK higher education? We teach “American” content in our classes, modules, and degree programmes, but do we also conduct our teaching in ways specific to American studies? Lee Shulman describes a “signature pedagogy” as “the forms of instruction that leap to mind when we first think about the preparation of members of particular professions,” encompassing both the types of teaching we conduct in our c…

Open Access•Annabel Whipp, Nicolas Malleson et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

This paper will critically assess the utility of conventional and novel data sources for building fine-scale spatio-temporal estimates of the ambient population. It begins with a review of data sources employed in existing studies of the ambient population, followed by preliminary analysis to further explore the utility of each dataset. The identification and critiquing of data sources which may be useful for building estimates of the ambient pop…

    Jonathan Ward•ARTICLE•Women s Studies in Communication•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This article examines Black motherhood within digital media and how the cultural mediation of Meghan Markle’s pregnancy and motherhood online can be understood. • Wakanda liberation is this? Interrogating Black Panther's relationship with colonialism

    Jonathan Ward•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2020•Cited by: 1

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther (2018) constitutes an intervention within representations of blackness within American culture. In a landscape in which the vast majority of depictions of black people in film remain severely limited and stereotypical, Coogler's blockbuster stands out as a celebration of blackness and a challenge of anti-black racism. The way in which the film grapples with the legacy of colonialism and represents an opportunity to de…

Despite the increasing visibility of queerness and queer folks in American popular culture, there is a concerning dissonance between this symbolic cultural progression, and the reality of queer lives that continue to be marked by discrimination, oppression, and violence. This article considers the ways in which RuPaul’s Drag Race (2009) simultaneously constitutes this increase in queer visibility, and yet also perpetuates specific hierarchies of …

  • The art of the good life

    Kate Oakley, J R Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Trends•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 4

The creative economy has seen cultural policy swallowed up by a narrow vision of economic growth, its impacts on the urban fabric captured by property developers, and its promises of meaningful activity challenged by the exploitation and inequities of cultural labour markets. So it needs to be abandoned and re-thought, but on what basis? This paper analyses the potential for cultural work to encourage alternative visions of the “good life”, in pa…

  • Engaging the Imagination

    Open Access•Kate Oakley, Jonathan Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Values•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This paper 1 explores the potential of ‘new nature writing’ – a literary genre currently popular in the UK – as a kind of arts activism, in particular in terms of how it might engage with the environmental crisis and lead to a kind of collective politics. We note the limitations of the genre, notably the reproduction of class, gender and ethnic hierarchies, the emphasis on nostalgia and loss, and the stress on individual responses rather than col…

  • Applying Behavior Change Theories and Qualitative Methods in Substance Misuse Implementation Research

Open Access•Stephanie Dugdale, Sarah Elison et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2017•References: 87

There is insufficient research examining the implementation of complex novel interventions within health care. This may be due to a lack of qualitative research providing subjective insights into these implementation processes. The authors investigate the advantages of applying behavior change theories to conceptualize qualitative data describing the processes of implementation of complex interventions. Breaking Free Online (BFO), a digital treat…

Therefore, a novel computer assisted therapy (CAT) programme specifically developed for a prison population, Breaking Free Health and…
