The Orange Order
Studies the rise and decline of the global Orange Order since its beginning in 1795 Based on primary sources, many never used before, from multiple archives across the world Global perspective that covers almost 230 years of the Orange Order Uses a comparative and transnational framework to examine Orangeism across multiple countries Breaks new ground in research on the Junior Orange Movement and material culture of Orangeism On a sunny day, men …
More than Banners and Sashes
This chapter examines a much-neglected area outside of Ireland: the material culture of Orangeism. The Orange Order, by its origins, is a fraternal society with many rituals and practices deriving from the eighteenth century. The chapter has a six-part structure to emphasise diversity within the material culture of Orangeism. It moves beyond a focus on banners in the context of Ireland to include the Orange diaspora. The chapter begins with the b…
The Orange Order
Global Orangeism is the first book to offer a major overview of the Orange Order across time and space from its beginnings in 1795 until the present-day. Its comparative and transnational framework facilitates an analysis of differences and similarities as the organisation transferred from Ireland to other countries in the British world. The book examines the Order’s origins and spread across the world, and assesses its structure and rituals, act…
“Harms” and the Citizen
In her landmark book of poems, O Cidadán (2002), Erín Moure claims that what define the citizen are gestures of border-crossing hospitality, not attestations of political belonging. She embodies her vision in poems that transgress the borders of syntactic structures, semantic fields, and linear organization of verbal and visual marks on the page. That creative and ethically responsible political and poetic enactments are analogically related and …
Anger, gratitude, and the Enlightenment writer
On the one hand, anger and gratitude are crucial in appreciating what one owes to oneself or others; on the other, they disturb one's internal balance and reinforce one's dependence upon others. This book explores the tension between these two attitudes in the work of French Enlightenment writers such as Rousseau, Diderot, and Marivaux.
Resentment and Reflection in Le Neveu de Rameau
This chapter examines the relationship between righteous anger and envious resentment in Diderot's satire Le Neveu de Rameau. The issue is explored in terms of whether one's personal dignity and independence can be credibly asserted, or whether there is no escape from humiliating dependence. The chapter then argues that this is an issue not only for Rameau but for the philosopher as well, who is reluctant to acknowledge his dependence on others f…
Discourse on the Origin of Inequality
In his Discourses (1755), Rousseau argues that inequalities of rank, wealth, and power are the inevitable result of the civilizing process. If inequality is intolerable - and Rousseau shows with unparalledled eloquence how it robs us not only of our material but also of our psychological independence - then how can we recover the peaceful self-sufficiency of life in the state of nature? We cannot return to a simpler time, but measuring the costs …

Memories of Urban Development
Grounds for Comparison

The Idea of Character in the Encyclopedie
MOST STUDIES of the Encyclopedie have, quite naturally, emphasized those aspects of the work that express either bold criticism of the ancien regime or the even bolder attempt to establish new modes of philosophic and scientific thought. Taking their cue, perhaps, from Diderot's own admission of the relative weakness of the semantic, lexicological, and literary parts of the text, critics have neglected them and it is only recently that attention …
