Bench marks of change
Ordnance Survey (OS) bench marks are small, chiselled survey marks, typically composed of a horizontal line or indentation above an upward-pointing arrow. Used by the OS to measure height during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, they shaped topographic knowledge in Ireland, Great Britain and beyond. Despite their ubiquity, they have received little scholarly attention, with recording projects emphasising surviving examples while overlooking…
Isolated data showers
Recent digitisation of major meteorological sources has offered valuable insights into Ireland's past climate. However, more localised historical weather data remain sparse for most of the country. A largely unexplored resource lies in the early nineteenth century Ordnance Survey (OS) statistical reports collected as a component of the first OS of Ireland. This research sets out how a team of researchers applied diverse techniques such as corpus …
A Summer with Pascal
Blaise Pascal is a marquee name, yet little read outside France. Antoine Compagnon provides an ideal introduction to one of the great intellects, contextualizing Pascal in his own time and offering insightful readings of the Pensées and the Provincial Letters . Compagnon proves a welcoming guide to Pascal’s challenging and rewarding thought.

Reprioritising inclusion and equity to meet SDG4
This commentary draws on the body of multidisciplinary research produced using the Young Lives Dataset, a 20 + year, mixed-method longitudinal cohort study in four countries in the Global South. In summary, inequality of opportunity in education had been falling over 20 years since the turn of the Millennium, but progress has been reversed by recent global crises. Longitudinal evidence shows that the home and community environment prior to enteri…
Reflections on translating Bruno Latour
“The parambulatyon of thys lordshype is not travele”
Surveyors tasked with measuring and recording the landscape of sixteenth century Great Britain and Ireland had no definitive guide on surveying practice and no comprehensive standardisation or regulation was in place. They rarely recorded the techniques used in their fieldwork and so their field practices are largely a mystery. For today’s historians of cartography who seek to understand why and how maps were made, this leaves a void in our knowl…

Gender Differences in the Choice of Major
We conducted a field experiment aimed at increasing the percentage of women majoring in economics. We exposed students enrolled in introductory classes to successful and charismatic women who majored in economics at the same university. The intervention significantly impacted female students’ enrollment in further economics classes, increasing their likelihood to major in economics by 8 percentage points. This is a large effect, given that only 9…
The Queer Turn in Feminism
More than any other area of late-twentieth-century thinking, gender theory and its avatars have been to a large extent a Franco-American invention. In this book, a leading Franco-American scholar traces differences and intersections in the development of gender and queer theories on both sides of the Atlantic. Looking at these theories through lenses that are both "American" and "French," thus simultaneously retrospective and anticipatory, she tr…
How to Be French
How to Be French is a magisterial history of French nationality law from 1789 to the present, written by Patrick Weil, one of France's foremost historians. First published in France in 2002, it is filled with captivating human dramas, with legal professionals, and with statesmen including La Fayette, Napoleon, Clemenceau, de Gaulle, and Chirac. France has long pioneered nationality policies. It was France that first made the parent's nationality …
Space and Time in 100 Million Words
The abundance of information contained in nineteenth-century texts means the traditional ‘close reading’ of Victorian culture has limitations. With the burgeoning availability of newspapers in digital format, there is a pressing need to look at how we might effectively and efficiently use these digital resources to help answer research questions and add to key historical and geographical debates. Focusing on the analysis of a large digital corpus…
Introduction
Digital Humanities (DH) is a dynamic and developing field. In recent years, its evolution has been witnessed foremost in the growth of funded DH projects and through the willingness of scholars from diverse backgrounds to not only work in DH research, but also as ‘digital humanists’. One crucial component to DH research is that of spatial enquiry, the expansion of which has rapidly evolved from a small component often found buried in research obj…

"The emergence of modern sciences in the seventeenth century profoundly renewed our understanding of Nature. For the last three centuries new ideas of Nature have been continuously developed by theology, politics, economics, and science, especially the sciences of the material world. The situation is even more unstable today, now that we have entered an ecological mutation of unprecedented scale. Some call it the Anthropocene, but it is best desc…

Patterns of infant mortality in rural England and Wales, 1850-1910
The study of nineteenth-century infant mortality in Britain has neglected the rural dimension to a surprising degree. This article maps the change in infant mortality rate (IMR) between the 1850s and the 1900s at registration district (RD) level. Latent trajectory analysis, a longitudinal model-based clustering method, is used to identify the clusters into which rural RDs fell, based on their IMR trajectories. Relationships between IMR and popula…

Social protection for all ages? Impacts of Ethiopia's Productive Safety Net Program on child nutrition
From Digital Resources to Historical Scholarship with the British Library 19th Century Newspaper Collection
It is increasingly acknowledged that the Digital Humanities have placed too much emphasis on data \ncreation and that the major priority should be turning digital sources into contributions to knowledge. \nWhile this sounds relatively simple, doing it involves intermediate stages of research that enhance \ndigital sources, develop new methodologies and explore their potential to generate new knowledge \nfrom the source. While these stages are fam…

Politics of Nature
A major work by one of the more innovative thinkers of our time, Politics of Nature does nothing less than establish the conceptual context for political ecology--transplanting the terms of ecology into more fertile philosophical soil than its proponents have thus far envisioned. Bruno Latour announces his project dramatically: "Political ecology has nothing whatsoever to do with nature, this jumble of Greek philosophy, French Cartesianism and Am…

The Philippines as an American Investment
The Future of the Philippines
THOUGHTFUL Filipinos entrusted with plotting the course for the Commonwealth ship of state, are only too well aware of the difficulties that lie before them. The expense that will be required to make the ship seaworthy and to keep it manned, repaired and running smoothly is an enormous item, which will leave practically nothing for equipping the craft with the many modern devices necessary to bring it up to a level where it can compete successful…

The Future of Philippine-American Relations
PLUS CA CHANGE, PLUS C'EST LA MEME CHOSE. Americans may reverse the clauses when they discuss their country's relationship with the Philippines for, while the fundamental problems remain, the relationship is changing greatly. At the time of the Japanese attack on the Philippines, the Commonwealth was completing the sixth year of the ten-and-a-half-year period which was to lead to independence on July 4, 1946. There were a few unsettled questions …

Malayan Postscript
America is in the Heart
It was a crime to be a Filipino in California...The public streets were not free to my people: we were stopped each time these vigilant patrolmen saw us driving a car. We were suspect each time we were seen with a white woman. And perhaps it was this narrowing of our life into an island, into a filthy segment of American society that had driven Filipinos...inward, hating everyone and despising all positive urgencies toward freedom

Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Sciences of Language
Encyclopaedic Dictionary of the Sciences of Language is a wide-ranging and thorough study of language and its functions. Eminent French theorists Oswald Ducrot and Tzvetan Todorov cover such major trends in the development of modern linguistics as general grammars and Saussurianism, as well as methodological and descriptive concepts. Combining the breadth of a dictionary (800 terms are listed in an alphabetical index) with the depth of an encyclo…
Theories of the Symbol
Symbolism and Interpretation
In Symbolism and Interpretation, Tzvetan Todorov examines two aspects of discourse: its production, which has traditionally been the domain of rhetoric, and its reception, which has always been the object of hermeneutics. He analyzes the diverse theories of symbolism and interpretation that have been elaborated over the centuries and considers their contribution to a general theory of verbal symbolism, discussing a wide range of thinkers, from th…
