  • Etude de statistique lexicale: Le vocabulaire du theatre de Pierre Corneille

    Gustav Herdan, Charles Muller•ARTICLE•Language•1968

  • Chinese—A Conceptual or a Notational Language

    Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Monumenta Serica•1967

Sinologues have often stressed the importance of language structure for the understanding of East-Asiatic culture, and given expression to the belief that the difference between Chinese and Western thought had its cause in the peculiarity of Chinese logic. Much thought was thus given to the question, what alteration in his thinking mechanism a European must undergo in order to understand Chinese literature and art in the way an educated Chinese p…

    C Douglas Chrétien, Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language•1965

  • Lexicality and Its Statistical Reflection

    Open Access•Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1965•References: 2

This paper puts forward the point of view that lexicality is a property of language at the lexical level which is comparable with grammaticality and phonemicality at the levels of grammar and phonology. The statistical reflection of lexicality is to be found in vocabulary connectivity, which in turn may be measured by a suitable statistical technique

  • On Communication Between Linguists

    Open Access•Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1964

  • Quantitative Linguistics or Generative Grammar

    Open Access•Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1964

  • The Patterning of Semitic Verbal Roots Subjected to Combinatory Analysis

    Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•WORD•1962•Cited by: 1

  • Vocabulary Statistics and Phonology: A Parallel

    Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language•1961

In the Introduction to his Anleitung zu phonologischen Beschreibungen (1935)' Trubetzkoy speaks about the methodological differences between phonetics in its physical and physiological and also, perhaps, psychological aspects, and the other part of linguistics (Sprachlehre), and then makes the following statement (here translated)

  • Problemes et methodes de la statistique linguistique

    Gustav Herdan, Pierre Guiraud•ARTICLE•Language•1961

  • Linguistic Philosophy in the Light of Modern Linguistics

    Open Access•Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1960

Both linguistic philosophers and their opponents are apparently of the opinion that linguistic structure can be recognised intuitively and that the matter is still virgin ground. However, as this paper shows, much of the confusion and acrimony of the recent dispute on linguistic philosophy is due to the neglect of scientific linguistics as we know it to-day, and to the difference between what Wittgenstein called “linguistics” and what is now unde…

  • The Authorship of the Pastorals in the Light of Statistical Linguistics

    Open Access•Kenneth Grayston, Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1959

The authorship of the Pastorals must have been among the first instances inviting the application of quantitative methods in literature. Schleiermacher's [1] critical campaign against the authenticity of I Timothy uses a great array of hapax legomena for establishing the linguistic peculiarity of that Epistle. The controversy continued on these lines, subsequent workers using linguistic criteria to a greater or lesser extent according to the valu…

  • The Hapax Legomenon: A Real or Apparent Phenomenon

    Open Access•Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1959•References: 1

This paper discusses the question whether hapax legomena—words occurring only once in a sample—are also unique in a larger corpus from which the sample is taken. The discussion requires a knowledge of how words with a specific frequency of occurrence in the total are distributed in samples and this problem is treated empirically and theoretically. As a result, a general answer to the central question is advanced

  • Language as Choice and Chance

  • The Relation Between the Functional Burdening of Phonemes and the Frequency of Occurrence

    Open Access•Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1958•References: 1

The frequency of occurrence of phonemes in a language may be derived from dictionary material or from continuous texts. This paper deals with the relation between the two sets of values for English. When distributions are plotted for English phonemes, classified according to manner and place of articulation, it is seen that there is a close similarity between the distribution for dictionary material and for continuous texts. The hypothesis is adv…

  • Language as Choice and Chance

Joshua Whatmough, Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•The American Journal of Philology•1957

  • Chaucer's Authorship of the Equatorie of the Planetis: The Use of Romance Vocabulary as Evidence

    Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Language•1956

[In order to let Chaucer's use of Romance vocabulary provide additional evidence of his authorship of The equatorie of the planetis , it is necessary to distinguish between the overall percentage of such words in his writings, and that in works of different length. It is shown that the percentage of Romance words changes significantly with the length of the text, according to the relation percentage of Romance words = 10 log 10 (total words in te…

  • Control Charts for the Standard Mortality Ratio

    Gustav Herdan•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1949

tells us not only how fast our species is killed, but what kills it, and the preference a specified disease has for different age-groups and for different occupations. The selectivity in the action of the various killers of our species with regard to social status and occupation has found expression in the so-called Standard Mortality Ratio (S.M.R.) which is the index the Registrar General uses for the purpose of describing the selective action o…
