This paper is a conceptual exploration and diffractive reading of refugee/(im)migrant education through multiple lenses, including data-driven decision making, critical refugee studies, new materialism and critical feminist and posthumanist studies, and trans theorizations such as Black trans feminism. After a brief introduction to “the field” of refugee/(im)migrant education, the paper turns to diffractive readings of refugee/(im)migrant educati…

  • Allied Attestations: Troubling a Progressive Goodwill and ‘Duty to Speak Out’

E Chang, Uriel Serrano et al.•ARTICLE•Equity & Excellence in Education•2023

Increasingly fraught disputes over education have elevated local school boards as key sites of inquiry. In this critical ethnography, we examine how ostensibly neutral school board rules, routines, and relations play out in practice. We asked, How do (queer) youth of color proponents, white opponents, and white allies of an anti-oppressive educational program exercise their agency within the organizational contexts of one suburban California scho…

  • Making Words—The Unconscious in Translation: Philosophical, Psychoanalytical, and Philological Approaches

    Open Access•Judith Kasper•ARTICLE•Humanities•2023

The topic of the article is the status of translation and homophony in philosophy, psychoanalysis and philology. The article focuses on the question of how translation is carried out using the basic principle of equivalence of meaning by homophony and what effects this can produce. The analysis of two case studies by Freud and Lacan shows that homophonic transfer from one language to another can be extremely productive for the subjective traversa…

  • Pushing the Boundaries: Education Leaders, Mentors, and Refugee Students

Open Access•Jill Koyama, Judith Kasper et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Administration…•2021

Purpose: In this study, we trace the work of refugee student–family mentors (mentors) in an Arizona school district who work across school–family boundaries. Utilizing boundary spanning theory, we examine how education leaders—teachers, school principals, assistant principals, and district administrators—work with the mentors. We document the interactions between the school leaders and the mentors and compare them with the interactions between th…

  • Separating families, recuperating the “nation-as-family”: Migrant youth and the cultural politics of shame

Open Access•E Chang, Jill Koyama et al.•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2020

This study investigates the intersections of policy, affect, and the lives of migrant youth. We approach the Trump Administration’s contingent reversal of a “zero tolerance” family separation policy as an illustrative case for understanding how affect mediates policy-making processes. Combining Critical Policy Analysis (CPA) and affect studies, we analyze 184 print media texts between the declaration of zero tolerance (May 2018) and President Tru…

Mortality of aged Medicare enrollees in three demonstration health maintenance organizations (HMOs) was compared with that of three cohorts of local fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries as a measure of group differences in health status. Mortality of the HMO and FFS cohorts was tracked via life-table analysis for 6 years after enrollment to measure the persistence of health status differences existing at enrollment. After adjustment for age, sex, …

Differences in expenditures for medical care among various subgroups in the population according to age, income, residence, and ethnicity have important public policy implications. However, few efforts have been made to assess the extent to which these apparent differences among subgroups observed in social surveys may be influenced by measurement error. This paper provides a framework for examining the impact of various kinds of error including …
