Before & After: Plasticity, Plastic Surgery, and Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In
Although Pedro Almodóvar is generally celebrated as a champion of gender and sexual “plasticity,” The Skin I Live In raises the possibility that we are less “plastic” than we care to acknowledge. “Plasticity” has emerged as a dominant theoretical concept in these postmodern times – the work of Catherine Malabou has been particularly influential – but Almodóvar’s study of non-consensual gender reassignment surgery challenges the contemporary parad…
Suicide risk and social support in Australian resource sector employees: A cross‐sectional study
This study examines the association between suicide risk and social support in Australian resource sector employees. We included 150 participants, who completed the Beck Hopelessness Scale and MOS‐Social Support Survey. Data were analyzed using smallest space analysis and multidimensional scalogram analysis. The analysis identified four distinct regions, which were conceptualized as “confiding,” “affection,” “companionship,” and “practical help.”…
Carers' involvement in decision making about antipsychotic medication: A qualitative study
BACKGROUND: Current Australian mental health policy recommends that carers should be involved in the provision of mental health services. Carers often provide intensive support to mental health consumers and gain detailed insight into their lives. As such, carers could make valuable contributions to well-informed decisions about mental health consumers' use of antipsychotic medication. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore carers' part…
A New Method for the Fast Analysis of Trihalomethanes in Tap and Recycled Waters Using Headspace Gas Chromatography with Micro-Electron Capture Detection
Chemical disinfection of water supplies brings significant public health benefits by reducing microbial contamination. The process can however, result in the formation of toxic compounds through interactions between disinfectants and organic material in the source water. These new compounds are termed disinfection by-products (DBPs). The most common are the trihalomethanes (THMs) such as trichloromethane (chloroform), dichlorobromomethane, chloro…
A Community Multi-Omics Approach towards the Assessment of Surface Water Quality in an Urban River System
A multi-omics approach was applied to an urban river system (the Brisbane River (BR), Queensland, Australia) in order to investigate surface water quality and characterize the bacterial population with respect to water contaminants. To do this, bacterial metagenomic amplicon-sequencing using Illumina next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the V5-V6 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene and untargeted community metabolomics using gas chromatogra…
Advocacy processes in mental health: A qualitative study
Advocates perform an important role in representing the rights of mental health consumers, especially since mental health consumers are often marginalized. Little is known about the processes advocates use to assist mental health consumers in navigating the health care system. This study details the manner in which advocates work together with mental health consumers and health professionals through presenting a qualitative synthesis of 60 case r…

Mental Health Consumers’ Motives for Seeking Advocacy Support: A Qualitative Exploration

Objective To investigate the experiences of women participating in a cooking and nutrition component of a health promotion research initiative in an Australian Aboriginal regional community. Design Weekly facilitated cooking and nutrition classes were conducted during school terms over 12 months. An ethnographic action research study was conducted for the programme duration with data gathered by participant and direct observation, four yarning gr…
Embracing participation in mental health research: Conducting authentic interviews
Purpose – Successful interviews are underpinned by several important processes that researchers must take account of. These include: understanding the meaning of participation in research, acquiring informed consent, establishing rapport, managing boundaries between research and helping, and embracing consumer participation in research. These processes have been addressed individually in articles, but have not been collectively appraised yet they…
Scaffolding young Australian women's journey to motherhood: A narrative understanding
Pregnant and young mothers' stories often go untold within community social and health service policy, planning and practice. Consequently, there is a significant gap between young women's experiences of motherhood and current service provision. This study was undertaken in response to a paucity of observational and contextually rich research that explores young women's experiences of pregnancy and motherhood, including the role a community servi…

Garbo Laughs
Through a witty close reading of Ernst Lubitsch's film “Ninotchka” (1939) - a Greta Garbo comedy explicitly marketed through the promise that in it the infamously impassive ‘face of the century’ would, in fact, laugh - Paul Morrison (Brandeis University) reads Lubitsch's film as a parable of the descent of Garbo's gestural excess to bourgeois intelligibility, and thus, of the domestication of her very modernism
