Four Stomachs and a Brain: "An Interpretation of "Esaú e Jacó
Drawing inspiration from the narrator's statement in Esaú e Jacó (Esau and Jacob) that the reader "has four stomachs in his brain," this essay attempts to identify what the four corresponding levels of meaning of Machado de Assis' novel might be. The following four readings of the novel are proposed: 1) mythic-religious immanentism; 2) national allegory; 3) the narrator as skeptic; and 4) the novel as roman à clé. Hispanism's Digital Turn
This essay focuses on the interface between praxis and theory in Hispanism in the twenty-first century. Poetry on Trial: The Strange Case of Lorca's Poeta en Nueva York
This article offers new information on the adventures of the manuscript of Poeta en Nueva York by Federico García Lorca, which 'disappeared' in 1940. It must be emphasized that this manuscript does exist (the author of this article has seen it), and it currently lies in a strong box in Christie's in London. Its story reads rather like a Mexican television soap opera: despite the strenuous efforts of investigators who were as persistent as only La…
