Crises of capitalism in the twenty first century
The cause of contemporary ?secular stagnation? of economic growth in developed capitalist countries is analyzed in this paper. A hypothesis is introduced that it signifies a transfer from cyclical to permanent economic crisis, opening the perspective of collapse of the system. It is demonstrated that the crisis is the consequence of the basic characteristic (and contradiction) of capitalism, and therefore cannot be removed within the ramification…
Values, norms and social dynamics
The aim of this paper is to offer a distinct approach to the theoretical conceptualization of values and norms, as well as their relationship to one another. This approach views values as a factor that can hinder the integration of the existing order and potentially contribute to a crisis of its reproduction. The relationship between values and norms is defined as potentially asymmetrical. The concept of normative-value dissonance is derived from…
The concept of class
Most controvers y that aris es around the concept of class is a consequence of the fact that protagonists do not differentiate the level of abstraction at which the discussions take place. Namely, the definition of the concept of class essentially depends on the analytical level at which social phenomena are analyzed. Therefore, it must be defined differently at different analytical levels. It is necessary to distinguish at least four such levels…

Making a New Consensual Elite in Serbia
The text firstly addresses the thesis that systemic transformation – from a socialist to a capitalist order – changes both the preconditions on the basis of which political elite is constituted, and its main characteristics. Considering the specific course of transformation in Serbia, this indicates the difficulties for the transformation of its divided political elite – characterizing the aftermath of the breakdown of socialism – into a consensu…

Class and Values in Postsocialist Transformation in Serbia
Circumstances such as the blocked transition in Serbia during the 1990s—with the prolonged political and economic domination of former nomenklatura members, the economic collapse of the country and massive pauperization of the population, external isolation, and so on—may result in the perseverance of old values among many social groups whose position has thus been extremely worsened. In this case, a gap between new norms and old values may be cr…
Changes in the recruitment patterns of the economic and political elites in Serbia
In this paper the changing patterns of economic and political elite recruitment in Serbia are studied on the basis of three sets of data, collected in our surveys done in 1989, 1993 and 2004. Our hypothesis was that elite recruitment patterns changed after the political regime change in 2000, but in a different direction compared to the period of the 1990s. From a long-term perspective, we expect continuing increases in the relevance of higher ed…
