“Housing didn’t solve everything”
Family housing instability is closely linked to child welfare issues. This study employed a mixed-methods approach to examine the long-term housing outcomes and experiences of families in a randomized controlled trial (RCT), and how insights from treatment group participants, their case workers, and child welfare workers help to explain those outcomes. We used county-level administrative data (n = 273) to explore and compare program participants’…

Temporal effects of distressed housing on early childhood risk factors and kindergarten readiness
Poor housing quality and housing crises have been linked to adverse outcomes for children. However, few studies have focused on the early childhood period or been able to pinpoint how the timing and duration of housing problems contributes to early educational success. This longitudinal study draws on linked administrative records from housing, education, social service and health agencies to examine the influence of exposure to housing neighborh…

How do we Know what Students are Actually Doing? Monitoring Students' Behavior in Call
This article presents a survey of computer-based tracking in CALL and the uses to which the analysis of tracking data can be put to address questions in CALL in particular and second language acquisition (SLA) in general. Adopting both quantitative and qualitative methods, researchers have found that students often use software in unexpected ways, a finding which has consequences for the notion of learner autonomy and underscores the need for lea…
Sexual Preference and Altruism
Several hypothesis have been offered to explain homosexuality. This study tests the prediction of the sociobiological model that male homosexuals should be more altruistic than heterosexuals. Subjects were dichotomized into homosexual (N = 76) and heterosexual (N = 51) groups on the basis of self-reported sexual feelings and behaviors. Both groups provided demographic information and completed Hogan's Scale. As predicted, the homosexuals were fou…

Discrimination of Salivary Olfactants by Male Mesocricetus Auratus
Salivary secretions of rodents have been observed to play an important role during various developmental periods. The present study examined the nature of adult salivary olfactants in regard to behavioral interactions. The ability of 12 adult male hamsters to detect and respond differentially to salivary stimuli from dominant and submissive males and a diestrous female was assessed. Air-borne stimuli were injected into an open-field, free-choice …
Discrimination of Male Social Status by Female Hamsters
This study was conducted to determine whether urinary ol-factants were capable of communicating information about a male's dominance status to females. Voided urine was collected from pairs of dominant and subordinate males. These odors were simultaneously presented to females in a Y-maze olfactometer. Females in estrus spent more time in proximity to the area infused with the odors associated with dominant males. Females, when tested while in di…
Effects of Diphenylhydantoin on Behavior Maintained by a Multiple Schedule of Food Reinforcement
Two white Carneaux pigeons were trained to peck for mixed grain according to a multiple fixed-ratio 50, variable-interval 30-sec schedule of reinforcement. After the rate of responding stabilized, the pigeons were given weekly doses of diphenylhydantoin or an equal volume vehicle Diphenylhydantoin produced a lengthening of the pre-ratio pause and general disintegration of responding during the FR component and a decreased rate of responding in th…

Authoritarianism, Age and Black Militancy
Past research has shown low authoritarian blacks and high authoritarian whites to be the most militant protaganists of their respective races in civil rights confrontations. It is argued here that racial militancy can be predicted only from a combined knowledge of authoritarianism and (perceived) social position. Among whites and blacks the traditional caste-like nature of race relations (and its concomitant culture of subordination) reinforced i…

Maternity Insurance in the United States
The phenomenal growth of the health insurance industry in the United States in the past 30 years has served well those persons able to afford this security. In recent years, major legislative proposals have been developed to extend health insurance, through national financing, to the general population. Maternity benefits, included in most private health insurance plans, have been an integral part of these proposals. It has been assumed that mate…
