Ancient Ardaxšīr Khwarrah, today known as Shahr-e Gur, situated near the modern town of Firuzabad in Fars, Iran, holds historical significance as the inaugural capital city of the Sasanian Empire. During archaeological excavations conducted in 2005 by an Iranian–German team directed by Mas‘oud Azarnoush and Dietrich Huff, a mud-brick complex was uncovered, revealing a remarkably well-preserved stretch of wall painting and a polychrome painted flo…

The circular pond of Dehbarm in the Firuzabad Plain (Fars, Iran)
We present the preliminary results of our recent find, a circular pond, and its surrounding structures, built in stone masonry of Sasanian tradition in the Dehbarm village, west Firuzabad Plain (Fars, Iran). We elaborate on this site and suggest it belongs to the Early Sasanian Ardashir-Xurra (Ardašīr-Xwarrah), the first Sasanian capital and complex urban plan of the Firuzabad plain. Based on comparable finds, we interpret Dehbarm as a garden set…

Excavaciones de casas en la ciudad azteca de Yautepec, Morelos, México, Tomo I y Tomo II
This volume contains the final report of a rescue excavation carried out in 2005 and 2006 in Fars, Southern Iran. The international rescue excavation programme was started in 2005, when it appeared that the area of Tang-e Bolaghi, a short distance from the important Achaemenid site of Pasargadae, was to be submerged by the creation of an artificial lake. Joint teams of Iranian and foreign archaeologists were set up to focus on the different chron…
The Finishing Technique of the Stone Monuments of Persepolis
The studies on the finishing technique of the stone monuments in Persepolis (Iran) are part of the archaeological project jointly launched in 2008 by Iran and Italy, named ‘From Palace to Town’. The first experimental results, obtained on a very limited number of samples, revealed that the Achaemenid builders and sculptors used a white pigment, a kind of bone white, calcium fluorapatite, obtained by burning animal bones, to hide the dark grey col…

The Archaeological Site of Persepolis (Iran)
One of the aims of the 5-year Iranian/Italian project for Persepolis, called ‘From Palace to Town’ was to contribute to the conservation of the stone monuments of the imperial site. As part of the activities dedicated to this purpose, a diagnostic study was carried out. Various aspects were considered: petrographic characterization of the stone, forms and factors of decay, and in situ testing of suitable conservation treatments. The present paper…
Further Excavations at Qaleh Kali (MS 46) by the Joint Icar-University of Sydney Mamasani Expedition
A second season of excavations was undertaken at Qaleh Kali during the winter of 2007/8. Initially, work was concentrated around one of the trenches opened in 2007 (E0978/N1055) in order to ascertain the extent of the Achaemenid pavement and portico exposed there. Later work focused on identifying mudbrick structures on stone foundations to the north of the portico. It is not yet certain whether these date to the Achaemenid or post-Achaemenid per…
