Critical Review: Synthesis and Recommendations for Research, Education, and Policy
This paper briefly critiques each of four papers presented at the symposium, relates how these papers contribute additional information on the realities of rural older women, and the implications for future research, policy, and outreach. The critique points out that the realities of rural women's lives can best be understood through their lens in combination with objective observations. Further, most of the conflictual findings in this literatur…
Implementing the Adams and Blieszner Conceptual Model: Predicting Interactive Friendship Processes of Older Adults
There is a paucity of information about the dynamics of friendships among older adults. To address this gap, the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (11) published an integrative conceptual framework for friendship research (Adams & Blieszner, 1994). Briefly outlined, it proposes that individual characteristics, as expressed through a behavioral motif, affect friendship patterns, and that friendship patterns vary by structural and cultur…
The Saliency of the Grandmother-Granddaughter Relationship: Predictors of Association
This study examined the solidarity of the grandmother-granddaughter tie when older women migrate. The sample, taken from a larger study (N = 308), included 69 relocated women with one or more grandchildren who reported a granddaughter to be the grandchild of most contact. The revised theory of intergenerational solidarity served as the conceptual framework. The results showed the saliency of the grandmother-granddaughter relationship depended upo…
Kin Expectations and Kin Support Among Rural Older Adults1
Relatively little attention has been given to the kin ties of rural older adults. To partially fill this gap in knowledge, kin selection theory was used as a conceptual framework to explore two questions on the extent rural older adults expect and receive assistance from the range of affinal and consanquineal kin and the factors that best explain the current level of support provided by each of the kin types in the family system. Analysis was bas…

Aging in a rural place: The elusive source of well-being
Loneliness and the Rural Widow
The purpose of this study was to determine if rural widows (N = 103) could be classified into three levels of loneliness on the basis of one or more of 16 physical, social, and psychological variables. A multiple discriminant analysis derived two factors that differentiated among levels of loneliness. The first and more important function served to distinguish the sometimes from the never lonely on the basis of satisfaction with relationships. Th…
Change in Life Satisfaction: A Longitudinal Study of Persons Aged 46-70
Longitudinal analyses were performed on changes in life satisfaction among a sample of 378 community residents, aged 46-70. There were no significant changes in the mean life satisfaction scores for any age-sex cohort and no significant differences between the sexes, although there were some individual changes. Life satisfaction at the end of a 4-year-period was significantly related to initial levels of self-rated health, social actiivty, and se…
