The Life of St Martin of Tours by the forgotten Tourangeau writer Péan Gatineau, writing in the second quarter of the thirteenth century, offers striking evidence of the liberation of octosyllabic verse from the line or couplet as a unit of composition through the use of enjambement, the bold rejet , and the breaking of the couplet.
