Interpreters of Economic Ideas
This essay uses the writings of Thurman Arnold to demonstrate his contribution as an economic public intellectual, economist, public servant, and compares him to other economic public intellectuals such as Roger Fry, Aldo Leopold, and Walter Lippmann
Perceptions of the (In)stability of Consumer Behavior
This article explores the evolution of perceptions of the behavior of consumers among economists and others. The article has three parts. The first part discusses the development of a hypothesis about the stability of this behavior: that the consumers know what they want, will pursue what they want, and do not need any help in doing so. The second part explores how this hypothesis was tested from around the turn of the century until the 1930s. Th…
Economics and Psychology
This article explores the interactions between the disciplines of economics and psychology as they emerged from the mother discipline of philosophy and moved into the twentieth century. Some of the early contributors who are examined include Simon Nelson Patten, William McDougall, William James, Thorstein Veblen, and Rexford Tugwell. Vigorous controversies took place over instinct theory, marginal utility, and behaviorism. Attention to the conflu…
Economics, History of
Walter Lippmann
Walter Lippmann was the most respected American journalist of the twentieth century. During the Great Depression and World War II he devoted most of his thrice-weekly columns in the New York Herald Tribune to exploring the causes of recession and the economics of war. He was a student of George Santayana and William James, as well as of Frank Taussig and Thomas Nixon Carver at Harvard, and his heart was in literature and the arts as much as in th…
Observation Through Fiction
Some novelists in the nineteenth century, for example Harriet Martineau and Charles Dickens, used fiction to illustrate the economic behavior postulated by the early political economists and their critics. “Realist” novelists later in this century and into the twentieth examined aspects of the economy as background for their storytelling. This essay looks at the work of two realist novelists who observed economic circumstances in their time with …
The First Globalization Debate
Two of the earliest novels in English, Robinson Crusoe (1719) by Daniel Defoe and Gulliver's Travels (1726) by Jonathan Swift, are widely perceived as an entertaining adventure story and a pioneering work of science fiction. Viewed by modern economists, however, they appear as expressions of opposing positions on the desirability of integration within a world economy. Crusoe demonstrated the gains from trade and colonization and the attendant soc…

The Bloomsbury Group as Creative Community
The Bloomsbury group was a multidisciplinary association of friends who came together early in the twentieth century. It contained John Maynard Keynes and others who had an interest in economic questions, including the art critic Roger Fry, the novelists Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster, and the man of letters Leonard Woolf. The group had little formal organization but cooperated in various ways and resembled in some respects a pioneering think t…
A. W. (Bob) Coats, 1924–2007
Bob Coats was an exceptional scholar. His work covered a wide range of periods and places, from eighteenth-century Europe to the contemporary United States. Furthermore it spanned different disciplines—economic and social history, intellectual history, philosophy of science, and the sociology of knowledge. What makes him exceptional is the way he helped open new fields of research within these areas: the study of American economics, the professio…

British Economists and Australian Gold
Two events combined at the middle of the nineteenth century to draw the attention of British economists to Australia. The first was the grant of increased local autonomy through the Australian Colonies Government Act of 1850 and subsequent legislation. The prospect of colonists, rather than the British Parliament, determining colonial affairs shifted the focus of economists' interest from London overseas and caused them to ponder seriously what B…
