What is laughter
This study analyses the evolution of the perception of laughter across the three main frontiers of Western knowledge: Classical, Medieval, and Modern. A documentary analysis was employed, grounded in the references made by some of the foremost authors of each period. It is proposed that: In the Classical View, laughter is seen as an expression of human superiority over animals, but inferiority before the gods, and should be avoided by the wise pe…

Television today
This article analyses the evolution of the phenomenon of television from its beginnings to the present day, exploring how this reality has adapted to social and technological change. Using a documentary analysis methodology, this exploratory study proposes four main phases: the early years, the maturing years, the technological transition and the present and future. The analysis suggests that, in each new phase, television has not completely brok…

This study focuses on analysing the relationship between the media, emotions and popular culture, with particular emphasis on daytime talk shows on generalist television in Portugal. Considering that the content of these programmes not only reflects but also influences popular culture, we analysed 60 complete episodes, approximately 120 h of audiovisual material. Despite their popular rhetoric, fuelled by highly emotive language, these programmes…

Do Societies Have Emotions
In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the study of emotions, demonstrating their importance in understanding diverse human and social dynamics. However, as this field of study develops and diversifies, a structural yet simple question remains virtually undiscussed: Is it really possible to say that societies possess emotions or a certain sensitivity akin to individual experiences? This exploratory study, based on documentary ana…
The Power of Laughter
This study examines the role of laughter in media content, focusing on traditional non-humorous entertainment talk shows with hosts, guests and a studio audience. The analysis, which documents over 20,000 instances of laughter in just 60 episodes (one laugh every 20 s), highlights the central role of laughter in this reality. The study concludes that: (1) hosts laughed more than guests and studio audiences; (2) in the programmes analysed, female …
The Role of Television in Shaping Democracy
Dominique Wolton (1947) needs no introduction within social sciences and outside the Anglo-Saxon sphere. There are 35 works by the French sociologist spread across 26 countries and 23 languages. Outside the academy, his recognition is equally wide, belonging, for example, to the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the highest French distinction established by Napoleon and limited to only 75 living people. With a PhD in Sociology, he admits th…
