Explanatory Justice
Recent years have witnessed an effort to explicate the concept of explanatory power in a Bayesian framework by constructing explanatory measures. It has been argued that those measures should not violate the principle of explanatory justice, which states that explanatory power cannot be extended “for free.” I argue, by formal means, that one recent measure claiming to be immune from explanatory injustice fails to be so. I end by concluding that t…
On Three Measures of Explanatory Power with Axiomatic Representations
Jonah N. Schupbach and Jan Sprenger ([2011]) and Vincenzo Crupi and Katya Tentori ([2012]) have recently proposed measures of explanatory power and have shown that they are characterized by certain arguably desirable conditions or axioms. I further examine the properties of these two measures, and a third measure considered by I. J. Good ([1960]) and Timothy McGrew ([2003]). This third measure also has an axiomatic representation. I consider a si…
On Schupbach and Sprenger’s Measures of Explanatory Power
Jonah N. Schupbach and Jan Sprenger have proposed conditions of adequacy for measures of explanatory power. They derive and defend a measure of explanatory power satisfying their conditions of adequacy. This article furthers the development of their measure. The requirement that the measure be multidimensional analytic (in the sense of the mathematics of several complex variables) is avoided. Several proofs are simplified, and gaps in proofs are …
Sculptural Fragments of the Furniture from the Crusader Church at Beth Guvrin
Presumably, in the third quarter of the 12th century the Hospitallers erected a church in their castle of Beit Gibelin. During the excavations conducted on the site, sculptural fragments belonging to a set of church furniture were found. The article examines these fragments and proposes the dating and the historical context. It discusses the plastic manner and the repertoire of decorative forms and ornamental motifs in comparison with the co-temp…
Evolutionary Works and Texts
Scientific writing is the most powerful and pervasive nature writing of our era. Instead of using science to interpret literary texts, ecocritics should read classic scientific "works" as "texts" (as Roland Barthes defines these terms), uncovering grounds for stories about nature and premises of modern environmental narratives. This essay examines a classic text of the modern evolutionary synthesis, Theodosius Dobzhansky's Genetics and the Origin…
