    Open Access•Nancy L Leech, Amy B Dellinger et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2026

Validity is an important consideration in all research studies, but it is especially important for mixed methods research studies. There are not many frameworks or guidance for researchers on assessing validity. This article presents nine available frameworks for understanding validity in mixed methods research. Hopefully this information will assist researchers in better understanding and using the concept when conducting mixed methods studies.

  • Measuring What Matters

Open Access•Ellen Roth, Stephanie Rayburn et al.•ARTICLE•Curator The Museum Journal•2026

An ongoing challenge for museums is understanding how visitors with diverse backgrounds and perspectives create experiences that are deeply meaningful. Therefore, the Meaningful Experience Measure (MEM) was created to explore what makes a museum experience meaningful and how meaningfulness relates to other constructs such as overall satisfaction and a sense of belonging. 2630 museum visitors across six museums were surveyed. Results indicate that…

  • Fostering Youth Sociopolitical Action

    Open Access•Carlos P Hipolito‐delgado, Dane Stickney et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 51

Critical pedagogies often prioritize critical thinking and social awareness at the expense of preparing urban youth for social action. Though sociopolitical efficacy is argued to bridge critical reflection and social action, this relationship is undetermined. We argue that critical reflection and sociopolitical efficacy are independent predictors of sociopolitical action. We surveyed 158 high-school students and found that critical reflection and…

  • Maternal Mental Health in the USA

Open Access•Margaret R Lamar, Courtney Donovan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2023

Mothers face enormous mental health challenges that need to be addressed by counsellors. Women have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and stress due to environmental, cultural, and biological factors. Findings from a sample of 525 US mothers showed that younger mothers had higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, while mothers with lower incomes showed higher levels of anxiety and depression. Results also indicated that fewer mothers …

  • Sedentary Work and Physiological Markers of Health

Open Access•Brad Wipfli, Sara Wild et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The purpose of this study is to examine associations between objectively measured workplace sedentary behavior and physiological markers of health. We hypothesize that increased sedentary time and more frequent bouts of uninterrupted sitting are associated with increased hemoglobin A1c, increased blood pressure, and impaired endothelial function. Call center employees (N = 241) were enrolled from four worksites in the United States. Participants …

  • Geographies of Medical and Health Humanities

Open Access•De Leeuw, Sarah De Leeuw et al.•ARTICLE•GeoHumanities•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 38

In recent years, both within and beyond academic and clinical spheres, medical and health humanities have become increasingly influential. Drawing from interdisciplinary fields in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts, medical and health humanities present unique lenses for considering nuanced spaces and lived experiences of health and health care; they also help challenge traditional ways that medicine and health care are understood and …

  • Graphic Narratives, Trauma and Social Justice

    Open Access•Courtney Donovan, Ebru Üstündağ•ARTICLE•Studies in Social Justice•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 10

In this paper, we explore the relevance of graphic novels to understanding and responding to the complex nature of traumatic experiences. We argue that graphic narratives of trauma, which combine visual images and written text, significantly differ from biomedical and legal accounts by presenting the nuances of traumatic experiences that escape the conventions of written testimony. Building on the literature that integrates social justice concern…

  • Representations of Health, Embodiment, and Experience in Graphic Memoir

    Courtney Donovan•ARTICLE•Configurations•2014•Cited by: 1

This essay focuses on the importance of incorporating graphic memoirs in feminist considerations of health, embodiment, and experience. It argues that graphic memoirs refine feminist engagement with these questions by demonstrating the complexity of embodied health experiences with both visual and written text. Like personal accounts, memoirs, and autobiographical writings on health and medicine, graphic memoirs provide valid and important empiri…
