  • Public Attention during Hurricanes Florence and Michael

Amber Silver, Sam Jackson•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2023

In 2018, Hurricanes Florence and Michael affected the southeastern portion of the United States, with widespread impacts in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The two storms were markedly different in terms of their meteorological history: Hurricane Florence made landfall as a category-1 storm approximately 2 weeks after formation, whereas Hurricane Michael made landfall as an “unprecedented” category-5 storm just 3 d…

  • From national identity to state legitimacy

    Open Access•Olga Boichak, Sam Jackson•ARTICLE•Media War & Conflict•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Social media enable broad and diverse publics to mobilize around a shared collective identity. In this article, the authors use social movement literature and studies of peace and conflict to foreground the role of platform-mediated communication in creating a national identity in a fragile state. We argue that, by affording activists with a possibility of public, yet anonymous interactions, social media may play a crucial role in conferring stat…

  • Nullification through armed civil disobedience”

    Sam Jackson•ARTICLE•Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The patriot/militia movement in the US has grown in prominence over the past several years, with the movement engaging in high-profile conflicts with law enforcement (e.g., at the Bundy Ranch standoff in Nevada in 2014) and political opponents (e.g., clashing with antifascist activists in Boston and Berkeley in 2017). One of the strategies movement leaders use to solicit support is to ground their goals and behaviour in American history. This art…

  • Non-normative political extremism

    Sam Jackson•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2019•Cited by: 3

Political extremism suffers from a definitional deficiency. This article proposes an analytical definition of the term, which avoids using extremism in a pejorative way. This definition also avoids exclusive focus on violence. This definition encourages the analyst to explicitly make the case for defining an action or an actor as extremist by comparing the action or actor to its political context. The article then explores several dimensions of a…

  • Hausa women on strike

    Open Access•Sam Jackson•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•1978•Cited by: 3•References: 7

A strike by Hausa women of Northern Nigeria in 1977 raised a number of interesting questions. How is it that these subordinate Muslim women could undertake and carry off a strike for better wages? How useful are the categories of ‘peasant’ and ‘landless labourer’, which are the cornerstones of generalizations about rural rebellions, in explaining the particular situation of Hausa women? Why is it that women went on strike as a response to exploit…
