Absent, Repressive, and Criminalized States
Nearly a million people from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala have been internally displaced in recent years, and hundreds of thousands more have fled to Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Europe. An extensive literature provides evidence that direct and structural violence are the principal drivers of this phenomenon. Largely unexamined is the way in which the governments of the region contribute to and in certain critical respects creat…
Smadditizin' with Charles W. Mills
This is a memorial essay on how the life and work of Charles W. Mills influenced my development as a Black philosopher. Employing Mills’s use of the Jamaican creole term smadditizin’—meaning “becoming recognized as somebody in a world where, primarily because of race, it is denied”—I trace how Mills helped me become a human self myself. Inspired by using his books as texts in courses I taught, and working with him in the Radical Philosophy Associ…
Covid-19 Related Experiences Among College Students With and Without Disabilities
This cross-sectional analysis estimated differences, based on disability status, in college students' ( n = 777) experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were modeled using t -tests and logistic regression. Most participants were white (86.2%), and women (66.4%). The mode age was 23. A third (35.6%) had at least one disability. Students reported high rates of psychosocial distress, like fear of contracting (59.7%) and spreading (74.3%) COVI…
The Black Radical Tradition as an Inspiration for Organizing the Themes of Radical Philosophy
Monitoring habits and physiological data in the frail elderly
There is a need for new models of care enabled by technology to support long-term and independent living of the elderly. Integrating telecare and telehealth technologies can be used to provide innovative support in an unobtrusive way. inCASA is a European Commission funded project that uses an integrated platform to monitor both health and habits data in the frail elderly and demonstrate the concept of integrated health and social services throug…

The Politics of Black Fictive Space
Historically, for Black writers, literary fiction has been a site for transforming the discursive disciplinary spaces of political oppression. From 19th century “slave narratives” to the 20th century, Black novelists have created an impressive literary counter-canon in advancing liberatory struggles. W.E.B. Du Bois argued that “all art is political.” Many Black writers have used fiction to create spaces for political and social freedom—from the e…

This article explores the relevance of the theories of poverty and development to the impoverished post-war setting of Rwanda. This establishes how our understanding of development applies to the reality of the current poverty reduction strategies such as those undertaken in Rwanda. The main argument is that poverty reduction in Rwanda is the most pressing challenge the country faces and that to reduce poverty in Rwanda is to reduce the possibili…
Race and Revisability
This article investigates the changing definitions of race. In this article, the author asks the questions, (a) To what extent is race an ontological, linguistically lexical, or political category? (b) Howhave changing scientific (i.e., DNA and Human Genome Project) and political (i.e., changing definitions for purposes of the 2000 census) paradigms altered conceptions of race? and (c) Are open definitions (i.e., constantly revisable) the correct…

External analysts are already trying to evaluate the impact of the reconstruction strategies of the occupying powers in Iraq. However, those with long experience in this field caution against a rush to judgement and emphasise that it will be the Iraqis themselves who will eventually make a value judgement on how the occupation has affected their nation. The paper seeks to define a possible approach to facilitating such an evaluation at the approp…
Affirmative Inaction? The Aftermath of Grutter and Gratz
Admissions to upper-tier universities have become increasingly competitive. The erosion of gains made during the Civil Rights Era is evidenced by recent legal actions at the University of Michigan. In this paper I argue that affirmative action programs remain a necessary means for achieving social justice. Further, I argue that more than mere affirmative action, what is also required is Nancy Fraser's Transformative Action. To reach these conclus…

Heroes of the Nation? The Celebration of Scientists on the Postage Stamps of Great Britain, France and West Germany
Despite their easy availability, postage stamps have received little attention as historical source material. One of the aims of this article is to demonstrate the utility of postage stamps for the study of the construction of national attitudes and cultures — in this instance, national attitudes to science and scientists. It has frequently been suggested that science has not been afforded the same level of respect in Britain that is usual in man…

Variation in Initial Procedures and the Stability of Dimensions Extracted from Free Response Data
The purpose of the research was to examine the stability of dimensions extracted from a body of free response data under conditions of variation in the initial data reduction procedures. Data consisted of over 1500 expressions of concern and questions raised by an elderly population. Complete sequences of analytic steps were conducted on the data by two groups of experimenters working independently. These sequences included determining representa…

The Treasury-Bill Futures Market
A model of the Treasury-bill futures market of the risk-premium augmented expectations variety is developed and estimated for the period March 1976 to July 1978. For that period we conclude that (1) futures interest rates deviate significantly from the corresponding forward rates implicit in the spot-market yield curve; (2) the hypothesis that expectations about the level of and trend in interest rates are formed adaptively from past spot rates f…
Systems Of Values And Their Multidimensional Representations
The purposes of the research were: (1) to elicit spontaneously mentioned values from a large and diverse sample of respondents, (2) to compare the spontaneously mentioned values with Rokeach's terminal and instrumental values, (3) to determine the ways in which both sets of values were perceived as varying on selected independently measured properties, and (4) to provide structural representations of both value systems. The spontaneously mentione…

The Origin and Development of Media of Exchange
The paper develops an explanation for the emergence of media of exchange through the unconcerted market behavior of individuals. Individuals are assumed to accomplish their ultimate exchanges through trading sequences which minimize the expected time spent searching for complementary trading partners. If individual perceptions of the trading environment are appropriately restricted, then the equilibrium pattern of trade will be some mixture of di…

There are, of course, several volumes and articles on Sumner, Ward and their followers, although much remains to be done here as well. But an assessment of the impact of Darwin on American sociology awaits at least two additional resources: 1) studies of the dominant schools of social thought before Darwin's appearance; and 2) studies of the careers of anti-Darwi…

Structural Representations of Naturalistic Descriptions of Personality
Using an open-ended questionnaire, each of a sample of college students was asked to describe the personalities of each of five people he or she knows well. A measure of concurrence of the most frequently used trait categories was used as input for hierarchical clustering and multidimensional scaling. The resulting trait structure was interpreted in terms of selected, independently measured properties of the traits. Different properties were foun…
