Riding Fences
In this article we question the discursive deployment of narrowing conceptions of the future in education in three provincial cases: Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. Asserting that educational policy in Canada is grounded in the “future-logics” of educational innovation—reflective of an anticipatory orientation to governance—we critique concepts from each province’s curriculum policy documents: “competence,” “personalized learning,” and “p…
Exploring nutrition education for migrants to Canada in Alberta’s health and community sectors
This qualitative study explored how migrant-serving agencies and healthcare providers in Alberta can support migrants to maintain healthy eating patterns. Through semi-structured interviews, respondents provided insight on their experiences working with migrant populations in the community. Observations about dietary acculturation (including food access, unfamiliar food environments, and perceptions of common foods in Canada) point to nutrition i…
Predictors of bystander behaviors and sexual assertiveness among college women attending a sexual assault prevention program
Identifying predictors of bystander behaviors and sexual assertiveness can help to inform sexual assault prevention programs on college campuses. College sorority members ( N = 141) completed measures of sexual assault history, rape myth acceptance, bystander self‐efficacy, sexual assertiveness, and bystander behaviors before attending The Women's Program, which is a bystander‐based sexual assault prevention program. Regression analyses were cond…
Conflict and gender
Sexual and gender-based violence in many conflict and post-conflict contexts are creating vulnerabilities to HIV. The paper is based on research conducted in Burundi in 2007-2008.The country experienced long-term civil war from the early 1990s until recently and has been the locus of post-conflict disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration programmes, providing a coherent and focused study. The research finds that the relationship between conf…
Securitization of HIV/Aids in Context
In this article, it is argued that concerns about the impact of HIV/AIDS on national and international security do not adequately address the ways in which people, particularly women, are made vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in conflicts. In fact, policies inspired by the security framing of HIV/AIDS can engender new vulnerabilities in post-conflict contexts. The article analyses the ways in which gender relations create vulnerabilities for various groups…
