Rethinking Vulnerability in the Nordic countries
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to rethink our understanding of vulnerability. This conversation has started to emerge in different forums across the Nordics. In this context, the Nordics have seen different responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this piece, we present three dimensions needed to push beyond the traditional notions of categories in understanding vulnerability. We also present different examples on how vulnerability …
The Covid-19 quandemic
BACKGROUND: The terms syndemic and infodemic have both been applied to the COVID-19 pandemic, and emphasize concurrent socio-cultural dynamics that are distinct from the epidemiological outbreak itself. We argue that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed yet another important socio-political dynamic that can best be captured by the concept of a quandemic - a portmanteau of "quantification" and "pandemic". MAIN TEXT: The use of quantifiable metrics in…
Castles, settlements, riverbeds from above – Aerial reconnaissance surveys by Zsuzsa Miklós in the Drava region
The present study outlines the most important results of the aerial archaeological prospection surveys conducted by Zsuzsa Miklós (1948–2014) in South Transdanubia, with special regard to the fortifications, settlements, and landscapes along the Drava photographed between 2008 and 2013. This is a completed and edited version of the paper left to us from 2014
The building of palisades and palisaded castles in Ottoman Hungary – Case studies
During the period of Ottoman rule in Hungary (1541‒1686), palisaded castles of differing sizes were typical elements in the border-castle networks on both sides of the battlefront: the Ottoman and the Christian. Archaeological remains (post-holes, beam structures, parts of palisades) complement the data in the written sources, making perceptible and measurable the great quantities of timber used in the building of castles. In the case of the Otto…
Supply chain and logistics competencies in humanitarian aid
The continuing incidence of disasters and their associated challenges has increased the demand for humanitarian logisticians. However, there is a dearth of research on their essential competencies. This paper proposes, therefore, a humanitarian logistics competency framework (HlCF) to assist with the professional development of humanitarian logisticians. In creating the HlCF, nine competency domains containing 29 specific competencies across four…
The humanitarian common logistic operating picture
Although significant progress has been made in developing the practice of humanitarian logistics, further improvements in efficiency and effectiveness have the potential to save lives and reduce suffering. This paper explores how the military/emergency services' concept of a common operating picture (COP) can be adapted to the humanitarian logistics context, and analyses a practical and proven approach to addressing the key challenge of inter-age…
The deadly life of logistics
I opened The Deadly Life of Logistics with much anticipation. The catchy title suggests controversy, crime, and of course, a critical eye on the topic. It doesn't quite read like a crime novel but

Basis of Heritagization and Cultural Tourism Development
The importance of culture and heritage is becoming more and more obvious, both in regionalists and regional development. Cultural factors are important because they directly affect economic performance and development, and therefore the competitiveness of the region. This study gives an overview of relevant literature, aiming to introduce the complex relations between culture, heritage, geography, tourism, economy and experience economy. Furtherm…
Perspectives on sustainability in humanitarian supply chains
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for analysing how humanitarian organisations (HOs) address different expectations regarding sustainability. Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative and qualitative content analysis is used to assess the annual reports (ARs) of HOs for their discussions on sustainability overall, and in relation to contextual expectations, subsystems and supply chains, organisational structure and st…
Kora újkori cseréppipák a dráva vidékéről
Early-modern-age clay tobacco pipes from the River Drava region. The study analyses Ottoman clay tobacco pipes from the River Drava region (Barcs, Babocsa, Szigetvar). Some are stray finds, but many of those from Barcs are from the Ottoman palisaded stronghold there, from its Ottoman layer. The study fills a gap in the literature in that it presents hitherto unpublished pipe finds from this region. The goal of the research was to establish whethe…
