  • Cinematic Minor Memory Work

    Michael Gott•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2025

Around the end of the aughts, France witnessed another resurgence of cinematic interest in the Second World War, with a spate of films released between 2008–2011 being linked by a particular focus on “memory work”. This article examines three of them: L’Armée du crime (Robert Guédiguian, 2009), Liberté/Korkoroedom (Tony Gatlif, 2010) and Les Hommes libres (Ismaël Ferroukhi, 2011). Although the Holocaust is of secondary (if unavoidable) importance…

Through an analysis of key moments of transition, transformation, or exposition within short scenes from six films set at least in part at airports, I examine how characters and viewers orient themselves between the hubs shared by air networks …

  • Bouger pour voir les immeubles’

    Michael Gott, Michael R Gott•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article explores the link between mobility and representation in two female-directed banlieue films. Jeunesse dorée (Zaïda Ghorab-Volta, 2001) is the first feature film by a female Franco-Maghrebi director while L'année suivante (Isabelle Czajka, 2006) is a notable representative of a more recent wave of female-directed banlieue films that have provided increasingly multifaceted representations of the banlieue. Both, I argue, are two of the …

    Michael Gott•ARTICLE•Contemporary French Civilization•2013•Cited by: 1

The road movie has recently become an increasingly popular vehicle for French and European filmmakers attempting to come to terms with the complexities of contemporary identity within New Europe and a postcolonial world. This article considers the ways by which one notable sub-category of French road cinema, the road movie, opens the door to a reading of contemporary identity as a concept not strictly delimited by the geographic boundaries of the…
