From the Marais to collective memory: How to map queer France
A Student’s Guide to Map Making: J. Parlier’s 1905 and 1907 Cartographic Manuals
In 1905, Jacques Parlier, a former artillery captain in the French army, published the first of two Méthode(s) de cartographie, cartes à main levée et de mémoire tracés rapides to teach French students how to draw maps. Parlier had become convinced of the centrality of geographical knowledge to French national security and interests. His manuals brought geographical and cartographical literacy to a generation of students in France. This paper exa…
Come Drive French North Africa: Cartographic and Guidebook Discourse in Michelin’s 1929 Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie
Extending France’s empire into the desert: Régnauld de Lannoy de Bissy’s feuille 17: Timbouktou
Upon the 1830 landing on the shores of Algeria, France solidified control of coastal territories. Although the French had little initial desire to move into the vast desert interior of North Africa, the so-called scramble for Africa and the glorification of Britain’s Dr. Livingston after his death later in the century inspired many French politicians and scientists to reexamine their own engagement with the continent. As a result, in 1883, Richar…
Mitigating defeat: Vidal de la Blache’s 1885 France Frontière Nord-Est et Alsace-Lorraine
One contributing factor to France’s devastating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War was a lack of geographic knowledge at all levels of the army. As a result, politicians proposed significant educational reforms in the 1880s, which included an enhanced role of geography in the national curriculum. In order to improve access to and understanding of that subject, French geographer Paul Vidal de la Blache published a series of Cartes murales that appe…
Creating Map Readers: Republican Geographic and Cartographic Discourse in G. Bruno's (Augustine Fouillée) 1905 Le Tour de la France par deux enfants
G. Bruno's (Fouillée) Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, first published in 1877 and with maps in her 1905 edition, introduced geography and provided maps to millions of French school children. The work also marks a crossroads between old and new ways of understanding France. Fouillée's narration describes the boys’ journey and championed republican values of honesty, cleanliness and hard work but it also introduced a republican geographic di…

A New Paris? Eugène Hénard's Vision of Paris's Future
Aux armes, citoyens!’: Mapping Regime Change in Charles Motte’s Plan figuratif des barricades (1830)
The July 1830 ‘Trois Glorieuses’ abruptly ended Charles X’s absolutist regime, and Charles Motte’s Le Plan figuratif des barricades (1830), published shortly afterwards, documents the violent struggle between the forces loyal to the last Bourbon monarch and the victorious ‘citoyen armés’. Much more than a simple map documenting yet another Paris revolution, Motte’s Plan provides the reader with a social and historical overview of a society in tur…
Maps for a New Kind of Tourist: The First Guides Michelin France (1900–1913)
The relationship between maps and text in the early editions of the French tyre manufacturers' eponymous guidebook, the Guide Michelin France (1900, 1905, 1913), was innovative. Car drivers found themselves being offered not a description of landmarks to be visited during a trip, but guidance on traversing a city, locating a hotel, and finding motoring assistance. Comparison of the maps in these editions of the Guide Michelin with those in other …
