Human vs. AI Influencer Marketing on Instagram: The Role of Message Appeals and Perceived Humanness
The rise of AI influencers challenges traditional endorsement strategies. Study 1 (N = 289) examines how influencer type (human vs. AI) interacts with advertising style (transformational vs. informational), finding that transformational ads work better with human influencers whereas informational ads increase credibility and purchase intentions when delivered by AI influencers. Study 2 (N = 297) investigates the role of human-like qualities in AI…
Testing Mechanisms in ASMR Persuasion: Advertising Consumers’ Resistance-Overcoming Sensory Satisfaction
As brands increasingly integrate autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) marketing into advertising strategies, understanding its underlying persuasive mechanisms remains a critical research gap. Building on the entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM) and extending its framework, this study develops the advertising consumers’ resistance-overcoming sensory satisfaction (ACROSS) model, identifying the psychological pathways through whi…

Can We Turn ASMR Experiences Into Advertising: College-Age Consumers’ Perceptions Of ASMR Contents and Advertisements
Despite the emergence of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) as a marketing tool, limited research has explored its effectiveness. This study uses in-depth interviews and social media text mining to examine college-aged consumers’ experiences, uses, and interpretations of ASMR content and advertising. Regarding ASMR content, themes that emerged include sensations described as weird at first but later “tingles,” relaxation, stress and anxi…

Are they being authentic? The effects of self-disclosure and message sidedness on sponsored post effectiveness
The importance of social media for advertising and marketing has brought growing interest and investment into sponsored influencers. However, much is unknown about the effectiveness of influencers, including the mechanisms by which these online personalities build and maintain authentic image. This study examines two important elements, influencers’ self-disclosures (present vs. not present) and message sidedness (one-sided vs. two-sided), to exp…
Delteil’s Les Écœurés: Gilets Jaunes and the Limits of the Noir
This article is an interdisciplinary study of Gérard Delteil’s Les Écœurés, a 2019 novel that was marketed as a “le premier polar en Gilet Jaune.” In this essay, we explore the generic tensions that arise when murder mystery intersects with socioeconomic criticism in our age of advanced capitalism. We argue that Les Écœurés functions differently when read through a sociological prism than it does as a noir or polar. We demonstrate that analysis o…
‘Ma tête mise à nu: ’ Wigs and Wigmakers in Madame Bovary
This article examines the moments in Madame Bovary where wigs are mentioned, reading them as a microscope into the novel’s representation of meaninglessness and its consequences. Starting with the wigs at Vaubyessard, then moving to the solitary wigmaker in Tostes, who serves as a double for Emma, then to the wigmaker in Rouen, and to Emma’s wig at the masked ball, I argue that wigs’ sartorial function and material composition place them at the i…

Travel, Collecting, and Museums of Asian Art in Nineteenth-Century Paris
In recent years, publications on the collecting and display of Asian art have been on the rise. Ting Chang’s Travel, Collecting, and Museums of Asian Art in Nineteenth-Century Paris is the latest addition to this encouraging trend. The book examines three major French collections of Asian art formed in the nineteenth century by Henri Cernuschi (1821–1896), Emile Guimet (1836–1918), and Edmond de Goncourt (1822–1896) respectively. Chang situates h…
Revisiting the Parent–Child Analogy: Implications for Law and Judgment
In order to explore the overlap between individual judgment and legal judgment, I turn to the parent–child analogy (the state is to the subject as the parent is to the child), historically much used to support the validity and basic rightness of the state’s judgment. In this commentary, I examine how the very dynamic and contested nature of the modern parent–child relationship makes the state–subject relationship, its contemporary and correlative…
Scruple and State Sovereignty: Fred Vargas's Romanticétatisme

"Punk "Noir: Anarchy in Two Idioms
The Menace of the Post‐Hardboiled Maverick: Jim Thompson's Pop. 1280 and Modern Television Detective Drama
Thanatos and Massive Psychic Trauma: The Impact of the Death Instinct on Knowing, Remembering, and Forgetting
The connection between massive psychic trauma and the concept of the death instinct is explored using the basic assumptions that the death instinct is unleashed through and is in a sense characteristic of traumatic experience, and that the concept of the death instinct is indispensable to the understanding and treatment of trauma. Characteristics of traumatic experience, such as dissolution of the empathic bond, failure to assimilate experience i…
