    Open Access•Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Feminist Encounters A Journal of…•2026

This video essay explores Kathryn Bigelow’s 2017 film Detroit from the perspective of heightened genericity. While the film is overtly docudramatic, the essay explores the various fictional genres which it tends not merely to deploy but rather to explicitly cite, with varying degrees of self-awareness. It argues that embracing artificial storytelling offers an ideal means to stage the film’s central concern with how highly constructed narratives …

  • Co-design of the Australian Prompt Response Network for a public-health focused intersectoral approach to information sharing on emerging drugs of concern

Open Access•Krista J Siefried, Penny Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

The rapid emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) and other emerging drugs of concern presents a significant global public health challenge, necessitating agile and interconnected drug information systems to identify and communicate risks. In Australia, responses have traditionally been localized, lacking a nationally coordinated system to rapidly share information about emerging drug threats. The National Center for Clinical Research on E…

  • Single-visit hepatitis C point-of-care testing, linkage to nursing care, and peer-supported treatment among people with recent injecting drug use at a peer-led needle and syringe program

Open Access•J Grebely, Rosie Gilliver et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2023

Point-of-care HCV RNA testing, linkage to nursing, and peer-supported engagement/delivery led to high HCV treatment uptake (majority single-visit) among people with recent injecting drug use attending a peer-led NSP. The lower proportion of people with SVR highlights the need for further interventions to support treatment completion

  • The “Selfish” Mothers of Contemporary French Screen Comedy

Open Access•Mary Ellen Harrod, Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Genre en séries•2022

This article explores a salient trend for “selfish” behaviours featuring in comic depictions of motherhood and the female actors who embody it in French cinema and secondarily television in the late 2010s. I identify tensions between various postfeminist ideals and the self-sacrifice and morally exemplary behaviour associated with contemporary parenting norms, including as coloured by US influence, which combines in an exigent admixture with trad…

    Open Access•Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Nottingham French Studies•2022

This article draws on Diane Negra’s (2009) assessment of neo-global postfeminist popular culture and cinema as displaying an obsession with time-control that is largely inimical to feminist progress, arguing that similar currents are visible in 2010s French screen romances. While manifestations of this obsession with relevance for the contemporary French context range from celebrations of ritualized, time-sensitive milestones (marriage, pregnancy…

  • Heightened Genre and Women’s Filmmaking in Hollywood

    Open Access•Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Feminist Encounters A Journal of…•2022

In this video essay I explore intertextuality in Twilight as a marker of cinephilic female authorship. I aim to show that the film relies for much of its gripping effect on overtly re-engaging overdetermined structures of feeling established by earlier texts, in other words by invoking genre memory. Considering the key genres with which the film engages – notably Gothic horror and romance as well as the teen film – I demonstrate how Twilight repe…

    Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Contemporary French Civilization•2021

This article examines Canal+’s contribution to the recent or contemporary consolidation of three genres traditionally excluded from the French filmmaking landscape: romantic comedies, horror films, and teen movies. The many films from these emergent French genres funded and in frequent cases also more indirectly supported by Canal+ speak to the organization’s status as a transnational, transmedia production entity. Moreover, analyzing the new Fre…

  • “Money can’t buy me love”

Mary Ellen Harrod, Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•New Review of Film and Television…•2020

This article surveys developments in the French romantic comedy of the 2010s from a cultural studies perspective. Specifically, it considers how the particularities identifiable in the French genre following its emergence in the 1990s and consolidation by the end of the 2000s have evolved during the next decade. It argues that the most striking new trend comprises a more domestically circumscribed orbit for the genre, with notably fewer export su…

  • From postnational mobility to posthuman fluidity

Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Northern Lights Film and Media…•2020

This article approaches contemporary European cinema as transnational cinema from an angle informed by gender and sexuality studies. It is underpinned by a fluid conception of identity, which it identifies with its objects of study, in terms of production context, market positioning and also form and theme. Specifically, I approach comparatively the embrace of postnational textual identity alongside posthuman – especially post-gender – characteri…

  • The aesthetics of pastiche in the work of Richard Linklater

    Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•Screen•2010

This essay examines the work of contemporary film director Richard Linklater in the light of the concept of pastiche. After beginning with a brief overview of recent scholarship on pastiche, both in culture as a whole and in cinema, it argues that it is a structuring mode in three Linklater films: Dazed and Confused (1993), Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006). The purpose of the analysis is to assess both the films’ intellectual meanin…

  • The Europeanness of European Cinema

Mary Harrod, Mariana Liz et al.•BOOK•The Europeanness of European Cinema•2015

From The Artist to The White Ribbon, from Oscar to Palme d’Or-winning productions, European filmmaking is more prominent, world-wide, than ever before. This book identifies the distinctive character of European cinema, both in films and as a critical concept, asking: what place does European cinema have in an increasingly globalized world? Including in-depth analyses of production and reception contexts, as well as original readings of key Europe…

  • Nationalism and the Cinema in France

    Mary Harrod•ARTICLE•French History•2016

French national identity, alongside the xenophobic side-effects of the assimilationist model of Republican citizenship, is sadly once again at the forefront of the public imagination. While the concept of Gallic nationalism is today most likely to conjure its ‘negative’ other (in both photographic and moral senses) in the image of Islamic State, historically the poles against which variants of French identity have defined themselves have been ext…
