  • A Review of Conceptual Approaches and Empirical Evidence on Probability and Nonprobability Sample Survey Research

Open Access•Carina Cornesse, Annelies G Blom et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Survey Statistics and…•2020

There is an ongoing debate in the survey research literature about whether and when probability and nonprobability sample surveys produce accurate estimates of a larger population. Statistical theory provides a justification for confidence in probability sampling as a function of the survey design, whereas inferences based on nonprobability sampling are entirely dependent on models for validity. This article reviews the current debate about proba…

  • Australian threshold quantities for ‘drug trafficking’: Are they placing drug users at risk of unjustified sanction?

    Open Access•Caitlin Hughes, A Ritter et al.•BOOK•2014

Legal threshold quantities for drug trafficking, over which possession of an illicit drug is deemed ‘trafficking’ as opposed to ‘personal use’ are used in most Australian states and territories. Yet, in spite of known risks from adopting such thresholds, most notably of unjustified conviction of users as traffickers, the capacity of Australian legal thresholds to deliver proportional sanctioning has been subject to limited research. In this study…

David Cunningham, Benjamin T Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2007•Cited by: 42•References: 54

Ethnic competition theory provides considerable insight into the localized contexts within which ethnic solidarities intensify and contribute to increased conflict, but gives less guidance as to how the spatial dynamics of such contexts impact the rise of sustained ethnic mobilization. Using the case of the Civil Rights–era Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina, the authors show that threat/competition dynamics were tied to distinct dimensions of spatia…

  • Reconceptualizing Religious Change: Ethno-Apostasy and Change in Religion Among American Jews

    Benjamin Phillips, B T Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Religion•2006•Cited by: 8

Drawing upon data from the NJPS 2000–1, we argue that traditional approaches to the study of religious mobility — both apostasy and switching — are increasingly problematic. Apostasy from ethno-religious communities, in particular, must be reformulated to incorporate an ethnic dimension. Analyses using this revised concept of “ethno-apostasy” lead to results that at times diverge from those of previous research. The findings suggest that the prem…
