    T HE SO-CALLED INVARIANT (or unconjugated) be is a well-established feature of black folk speech. Although it is called INvariant, there is wide recognition that the feature has the alternate form, bees. However, there has been no systematic analysis to determine if there might be patterns which govern the use of bees. The data of the Linguistic Atlas of the Gulf States (LAGS) provide an opportunity for such an analysis.' This analysis addresses …
