Which Factors in a Child Welfare Worker’s Environment Influence Their Decision-Making About Neglect? A Systematic Narrative Literature Review
This paper systematically reviews literature to date about how child welfare workers’ decisions about neglect are influenced by their environments. We conducted a systematic search of Web of Science, Embase, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Applied Social Sciences Index & Abstracts, looking for studies in English of any methodology, published since the 1989 Children Act, in which statutory thresholds in England are defined. We used child welfare workers’ de…
Silver Bullet Versus Ecosystem: Unraveling the Impact of Jewish Educational Interventions on Jewish Identity
Evaluative research in Jewish education often adopts a “silver bullet” approach, attributing identity outcomes to single programs or interventions. This article advances an ecosystem framework that situates Jewish schooling, family upbringing, and peer networks within their wider communal and societal contexts. Drawing on hierarchical regression analyses of large-scale survey data ( n = 21,260) from four Jewish diaspora communities, we find that …

The social must be stabilised: How are the social needs of young people with social work involvement characterized in their mental health case notes
In Donzelot's landmark The Policing of Families, he traced the rise of the "social" sector in the 18th century, where institutions like social work, education, and healthcare regulated families, shaping norms of deviance to justify intervention. Social scientists continue to debate the impact of post-2008 austerity measures on the relationship between the social sector and family life in contemporary society. This study aims to contribute to thes…
Social Workers’ Perceptions of the Nature of Child Neglect: A Systematic Literature Review
Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment in the UK and the USA. This article reviews research about how child neglect is perceived by social workers. We conducted a systematic review and identified fifty relevant studies, using a range of methodologies, published since the 1989 Children Act. The themes were identified iteratively and synthesised using a narrative method. The review found that despite evidence that neglect is associat…
Surrounded by Darkness, Enfolded in Light: Factors Influencing the Mental Health of Australian Jews in the October 7 Aftermath
This study examines the effects of social media use on anxiety levels of Australian Jews during the 5-week post-October 7 aftermath. It considers this relationship in the context of the mediating roles played by concerns about rising antisemitism in Australia and concerns about Israel. It further examines the moderating effects on these relationships of non-Jewish friends reaching out with messages of sympathy and concern, and the effects of Jewi…

Objective To evaluate levels of vitamin D 3 and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), and the ratio of HDL-C to LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), in schoolchildren receiving vitamin-D-fortified, fat-depleted, high-Ca milk in schools. Design Cross-sectional study of previously randomised schools receiving supplemental milk, compared with a matched control group. Setting Low-decile Year 1–6 schools in the Waikato region of New Zealand. Subjects Year 3 children from eith…

An Interregnum of the Sign: The Emblematic Age in France, Essays in Honour of Daniel S. Russell
A. Foakes aims in Shakespeare and Violence to chart the development of Shakespeare's thinking about violence over the course of his dramatic career. Foakes argues that Shakespeare's plays "may be seen as following a trajectory that begins with a delight in representing violence for entertainment, continues in a series of plays that explore various aspects of the problem of violence, and ends with a searching study of human aggression in relation …

Using the Internet as Part of Directed Learning in Social Geography: Developing Web pages as an introduction to local social geography
This paper describes a prototype-a self-authored project using the Internet as a platform for the dissemination of information relating to aspects of the social geography of Nottingham, UK. It addresses the issues related to the successful integration of specifically tailored, Web-delivered material as an integral part of an existing, traditionally taught geography module. An evaluation of this type of delivery as an enhancement to the undergradu…

Female employment and infant mortality: Some evidence from British towns, 1911, 1931 and 1951

Relationship of Specific Attitudes and Emotions to Certain Bodily Diseases
Cutaneous Vascular Reactions in Raynaudʼs Disease and in States of Hostility, Anxiety, and Depression
Observations of changes in the minute vessels (capillaries and venules) and arterioles of the forearm skin were made in 19 patients with various diseases at times of experimentally induced emotional disturbances. An attitude of hostility (a wish to take directly aggressive action) was associated with constriction of arterioles and increased tone of minute vessels. Such hostility was found to be an invariable accompaniment of major attacks of Rayn…
Experimental Investigation of the Specificity of Attitude Hypothesis in Psychosomatic Disease
A specificity of attitude hypothesis, developed originally from the clinical study of patients with various psychosomatic diseases, was tested experimentally by suggesting attitudes to normal subjects and measuring concomitant changes in skin temperature of the hand. The hypothesis states that each attitude toward a disturbing situation is associated with its own specific disease or set of physiological changes. Subjects were hypnotized as an aid…
Vasovagal Fainting: A Diphasic Response
Vasovagal (vasodepressor) fainting was studied in three different situations: in persons donating blood, in persons having a simple venipuncture, and in patients undergoing pneumoencephalography. Ten faints were observed in the first situation, 7 in the second and 6 in the third. In all instances, the faint itself, characterized by low blood pressure and bradycardia, was the second phase of a diphasic response; the first phase was characterized b…
Physiological Response to the Suggestion of Attitudes Specific for Hives and Hypertension
A specificity-of-attitude hypothesis for psychosomatic disease was tested experimentally by means of hypnotic suggestion of attitudes. Twenty healthy male subjects were given two attitude suggestions on each of 2 days, with the order of presentation reversed on the second day. The two attitudes employed were those associated with hives (the subject felt that he was being unjustly treated and could think of nothing he wanted to do about it), and h…
Specific Attitudes in Initial Interviews with Patients Having Different “Psychosomatic” Diseases
A specificity-of-attitude hypothesis, proposed by Grace and Graham,3 stated that there is a specific relation between the attitude towards a stressful stimulus and the disease which occurs in response to the stimulus. Two interview studies with hospitalized patients investigated whether attitudes predicted to be associated with diseases were more applicable to patients having the disease in question than to patients who did not have the disease. …
Health, Disease, and the Mind-Body Problem: Linguistic Parallelism
The mind-body problem is of practical importance in medicine. Current thinking about it is confused, and leads to significant errors in considering health and disease and in dealing with individual patients. “Psychological” and “physical” cannot usefully be thought of as referring to different kinds of states or events; rather, they are names of different but parallel languages that may be used for describing exactly the same events. “Functional”…
