  • Parameters of Morphosyntactic Variation in Khoe‐Kwadi 1

    Open Access•Chris Collins, C A Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Philological…•2025

Mainly spoken in Namibia and Botswana, Khoe‐Kwadi languages belong to the typological unit “Southern African Khoisan,” which is most prominently defined by the existence of phonemic click consonants. Typologically, Khoe‐Kwadi languages share characteristics that set them aside from neighboring Khoisan languages of the Kx'a and Tuu families, including a sex‐based gender system, verb‐final constituent order, and head‐final noun phrases. Despite the…

  • Leveraging tuberculosis programs for future pandemic preparedness: A retrospective look on Covid-19

Open Access•Whitney Bowen, Ho Tri et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Worldwide, COVID-19 has decimated healthcare systems and highlighted the pressing need to ensure resilience for future pandemics. Given the almost 30% likelihood of another respiratory disease similar to COVID-19 manifesting in the next 10 years, it is imperative to prioritize pandemic preparedness in the immediate future. To this end, tuberculosis (TB) and its management share many similarities to respiratory disease protection, offering an oppo…

  • Leveraging the HIV response to strengthen pandemic preparedness

Open Access•Chris Collins, Michael Isbell et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic and the expectation of future pandemic threats have generated a global dialogue on strengthening pandemic preparedness and response (PPR). Thus far, this dialogue has largely failed to fully consider the critical role that established, disease-specific programs played in national and regional COVID-19 responses, and the potential for these programs to contribute to stronger pandemic preparedness for the future. The HIV respo…

  • Spanish usted as an imposter

    Chris Collins, Francisco Ordóñez•ARTICLE•Probus•2021

Across dialects, Spanish uses the third person forms usted and ustedes to refer to the addressee. In this squib, we propose an imposter analysis of these forms in the framework of Collins and Postal (2012. Imposters. MIT Press, Cambridge.)

  • On the Subject of Negative Auxiliary Inversion

Open Access•Frances Blanchette, Chris Collins•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2019

This article presents a novel analysis of Negative Auxiliary Inversion (NAI) constructions such as didn't many people eat , in which a negated auxiliary appears in pre-subject position. NAI, found in varieties including Appalachian, African American, and West Texas English, has a word order identical to a yes/no question, but is pronounced and interpreted as a declarative. We propose that NAI subjects are negative DPs, and that the negation raise…

  • Could the Virtual Dinosaur See You? Understanding Children’s Perceptions of Presence and Reality Distinction in Virtual Reality Environments

Open Access•T Liao, Nancy A Jennings et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Virtual Worlds Research•2019

Despite the growing interest and use of virtual reality (VR) in American homes, there is a notable gap in empirical studies that examine VR and children. This study identifies two important research concepts in children's research that have been studied across many types of media 1) reality distinction and 2) presence, and applies them to studying VR experiences. Taking a qualitative approach, 6 to 8-year-old children (N=29) participated in a VR …

  • Disentangling two distinct notions of NEG raising

    Open Access•Chris Collins, Paul M Postal•ARTICLE•Semantics and Pragmatics•2018

In this paper we consider two analyses of NEG raising phenomena: a syntactic approach based on raising NEG, as recently advocated in Collins & Postal 2014, and a semantic/pragmatic approach based on the Excluded Middle Assumption; see Bartsch 1973. We show that neither approach alone is sufficient to account for all the relevant phenomena. Although the syntactic approach is needed to explain the distribution of strict NPIs and Horn clauses, the s…

  • The Linker in the Khoisan Languages: Documentary and Theoretical Approaches

Harold Torrence, Chris Collins et al.•BOOK•The Linker in the Khoisan Languages•2017

The linker introduces (“links”) a variety of expressions into the verb phrase: locatives, the second object of a double object construction and a causative, instruments, subject matter arguments, and adverbs. It is present in all non-central Khoisan languages (e.g., ǂHoã, Nǀuu, Juǀ’hoan, ǃXoõ and ǀXam). The linker is also found outside of Khoisan in African languages such as Yoruba, Baoule, and Kinande. This chapter summarizes the basic propertie…

  • NEG Raising and Serbo-Croatian NPIs

    Open Access•Chris Collins, Paul M Postal•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2017

Collins and Postal (2014) postulate that English NPIs represent two distinct structures: a unary NEG structure and a binary NEG structure. Some NPIs, such as any and ever expressions, can instantiate either of these two structures in different contexts. Others (such as one use of jackshit ) have only unary NEG structures. The present article seeks to provide cross-linguistic support for this hypothesis by showing that the two series of NPIs in Se…

    Open Access•Chris Collins, Paul M Postal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Collins & Postal (2014) argue that English NPIs have two distinct syntactic structures: a unary NEG structure and a binary NEG structure. They suggest that this distinction is generally valid for natural languages. This formal difference was taken to reconstruct the common distinction in NPI studies between strong and weak NPIs. The present analysis of Ewe NPIs seeks to provide cross-linguistic support for this dual conception of NPIs by showing …

  • Differences in airstream and posterior place of articulation among Nǀuu clicks

    Open Access•Amanda L Miller, J Brugman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 18

This paper describes the consonant inventory of the endangered southern African language Nǀuu. Our novel approach to segment classification accounts for all 73 Nǀuu consonants with just four phonetic dimensions (place, manner, phonation, airstream) and does away with the phonetically empty categoryclick accompaniment. We provide ultrasound data showing that the posterior constrictions in clicks are not produced at the 'velar' place of articulatio…

Spears 1998 discusses a use of the word ass in African American English (AAE) in sentences like They done arrested her stupid ass and I'm gonna sue her ass. We refer to DPs like her stupid ass generically as the ACC (ass CAMOUFLAGE CONSTRUCTION), and we view the ACC as an instance of a universal grammatical phenomenon we call CAMOUFLAGE. The ACC is also attested in non- AAE dialects of American English (Beavers & Koontz-Garboden 2006a). For certa…

  • The abscence of the linker in double object constructions in Nuu

    Open Access•Chris Collins•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2004

The linker in Nluu appears before various types of nominal expressions, but not before the second object in a double object construction. Linkers in Khoisan languages such as +Hoan and Jul'hoansi do appear in this position. I will show that this property of the linker in Nluu is related to the fact that Nluu has a dative Case marker -a which appears after the first object of a DOC, whereas +Hoan and Jul'hoansi do not. 1

    Chris Collins•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 4

I argue that verbal compounds in ≠ Hoan are derived from underlying structures similar to serial verb constructions. I show that the derivation crucially involves multiple verb movement, which is subject to the same kinds of locality constraints as other types of multiple movement. I show how the multiple verb movement analysis applies to a range of verbal compounds in ≠ Hoan

    Open Access•Chris Collins•ARTICLE•Language•2001•Cited by: 6

In Hoan, nouns and verbs can be pluralized. This article investigates various syntactic and semantic aspects of plurality in Hoan: first, the formation of plurals of inalienable nouns, then, how the plurals of verbs (termed PLURACTIONAL VERBS) are formed in much the same way as the plurals of inalienable nouns. The phenomenon of pluractional verbs strongly supports the event argument analysis of verbal semantics

  • Manuel de Falla, L'acoustique nouvelle and Natural Resonance: A Myth Exposed

    Open Access•Chris Collins, C A Collins•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Musical…•2003

The author demonstrates that Lucas's theories are largely unconcerned with the harmonic series and that Falla's use of ‘natural resonance’ has been misunderstood. Study of Falla's work, including manuscripts and wr…
