  • Peripheral and central auditory impairment linked to heavy metal exposure in Nicaraguan children from artisanal mining communities

Open Access•Marissa Kachadoorian, Torri Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Children living in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities are exposed to numerous metals with possible ototoxic and neurotoxic effects. Tests of peripheral and central auditory function can reflect toxicity to the ear and brain, respectively. This study investigated the link between metal exposure and peripheral and central auditory processing (CAP) in children exposed to metals in ASGM settings. Methods: In a cross-…

  • An analysis of the inclusion of ear and hearing care in national health policies, strategies and plans

Open Access•Julia Canick, Beatriz Petrucci et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2023

Ear- and hearing-related conditions pose a significant global health burden, yet public health policy surrounding ear and hearing care (EHC) in low- and middle-income countries is poorly understood. The present study aims to characterize the inclusion of EHC in national health policy by analysing national health policies, strategies and plans in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. Three EHC keywords were searched, including ear*, hea…

  • What’s the Point? Balancing Purpose and Play in Rule-based Compositions

    James Saunders•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2022

The paper applies theory drawn from game studies to music composition in order to consider ways in which rules and goals create environments that promote critical play and manage the balance between purpose, play and task subservience. It explores correspondences between rules in games and indeterminate music, and considers how constraints create agency for players through presenting them with choices and goals that can be linked to values. Game …

  • Specific Objects? Distributed Approaches to Sourcing Sonic Materials in Open form Compositions

    James Saunders•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2013

Open instrumentation is a common feature of many indeterminate compositions, whether they use stave, graphic, or verbal notation. This article examines the strategies used in some of my recent work for obtaining and using materials and objects as instrumental resources, focusing on maximizing variety within carefully prescribed boundaries. In surfaces (2010–2011), the score provides instructions for specific actions, but leaves open the choice of…

  • Testing the Consequences—Multipart Series in the Work of the Wandelweiser Composers

    James Saunders•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2011

Series comprising multiple autonomous parts that share common features and/or a determining principle are prevalent in the work of the Wandelweiser composers. This article compares these composers' use of multipart series with related practices in the visual arts, considering the differences between open and closed series. It focuses on three conditions by which series may be terminated: predetermined conditions decided upon in advance of making …

    Open Access•James Saunders, J Matthew Saunders•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The lurches from Catholicism to Protestantism and back which occurred in the reigns of Henry VIII, his son and two daughters produced dramatic changes in the liturgies, decorative fittings, and even, on occasions, the architecture of the country's cathedrals. Yet, despite these changes, there was a real sense in which cathedrals were at the eye of the confessional storms which raged about them. It is true that, as part of the Henrician reform pro…
