Minimally Invasive Approaches to the High‐Resolution Mapping of Colluvial Deposits at the Battlefield of Waterloo: Implications for Archaeological Practice
Soil erosion poses a considerable threat to ecosystem services around the world. Among these, it is extremely problematic for archaeological sites, particularly in arable landscapes where accelerated soil degradation has been widely observed. Conversely, some archaeological deposits may obtain a certain level of protection when they are covered by eroded material, thereby lessening the impacts of phenomena such as plow damage or bioturbation. As …
Geophysical approaches to the archaeological prospection of early modern battlefield landscapes: A review of methods and objectives
This paper reviews methodological approaches in battlefield archaeology with a focus on sites of the early modern period, ca.17th-19th century. The challenges associated with the prospection of these sites partially explains the relative lack of serious research in this area until the late 20th century. While acknowledging the foundational role of conventional metal detection in overcoming these difficulties, it is argued that other less widely dep…
Contributions of Multi‐Method Geophysical Survey to Archaeological Research at the Battlefield of Waterloo
Archaeological prospection is continually expanding into new frontiers, examining increasingly large areas, diverse environmental contexts and varying site types. One area that has received only limited focus is historic battlefields. This paper presents results from large‐scale geophysical surveys (> 100 ha) at the Napoleonic battlefield of Waterloo (1815) in Belgium, using fluxgate magnetometry and frequency‐domain electromagnetic induction. De…
The Cambridge Companion to Metal Music
Since its beginnings more than fifty years ago, metal music has grown in popularity worldwide, not only as a musical culture but increasingly as a recognised field of study. This Cambridge Companion reflects the maturing field of 'metal music studies' by introducing the music and its cultures, as well as recent research perspectives from disciplines ranging from musicology and music technology to religious studies, Classics, and Scandinavian and …
Human-centred mechanism design with Democratic AI
Building artificial intelligence (AI) that aligns with human values is an unsolved problem. Here we developed a human-in-the-loop research pipeline called Democratic AI, in which reinforcement learning is used to design a social mechanism that humans prefer by majority. A large group of humans played an online investment game that involved deciding whether to keep a monetary endowment or to share it with others for collective benefit. Shared reve…
Emotion in Video Game Soundtracking
"This book presents an overview of the emerging field of emotion in videogame soundtracking. The emotional impact of music has been well-documented, particularly when used to enhance the impact of a multimodal experience, such as combining images with audio as found in the videogames industry. Soundtracking videogames presents a unique challenge compared to traditional composition (for example film music) in that the narrative of gameplay is non-…
Stagger Lee: How violent nostalgia created an American folk song standard
Stagger' Lee Shelton (1865-1912) was an African-American carriage driver and sometime-pimp from Missouri. He became immortalized in song as a folklore antihero after murdering a drinking partner following a political argument gone bad in a St Louis saloon on Christmas day, 1895. Sentenced to 25 years in prison, Shelton died in Missouri State Penitentiary after violating his parole with a subsequent conviction for assault and robbery. The song, St…
Tools for Fashioning Voices: An Interview with Trevor Wishart
Trevor Wishart, York-based electroacoustic composer and sonic artist, discusses his most recent piece, Encounters in the Republic of Heaven, a piece in four acts created from manipulated recordings of the spoken word, after his keynote speech to the Symposium for the Performance of Electronic and Experimental Composition (SPEEC) on Friday 11 January 2012, at the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, St Hilda's College, University of Oxford
The Purple Robe Incident and the Formation of the Early Modern Sōtō Zen Institution
The transition from the medieval to the early modern Buddhist order was directed in large measure by a new regulatory regime instituted by the Tokugawa bakufu. These new directives issued from Edo increasingly regulated every aspect of both political and religious life during the first half of the seventeenth century. As the bakufu extended its control over domains through a pyramidal hierarchy of order towards the center, similar formations of r…
The Intersection of the Local and Translocal at a Sacred Site: The Case of Osorezan in Tokugawa Japan
Osorezan is often portrayed today as a remote place in the Shimokita Peninsula, a borderland between this world and the other world, where female mediums called itako communicate with the dead. This article is an attempt to sketch the historical development of Osorezan with evidence from local archives, travel records, temple collections, and inscriptions from stone monuments. With newly available local historical data, despite what temple pamphlet…
