  • The Diaspora and Returnee Entrepreneurship

    Nick Williams•BOOK•Diaspora and Returnee Entrepreneurs…•2021

This book analyses the role that the diaspora play when returning as entrepreneurs to their homeland. Returnee entrepreneurs are defined as individuals who have moved away from their home country and lived as part of the diaspora, and have later returned home to live, invest, or both. With increased movements of people around the world, the role of transnational economic activity is becoming ever more significant, yet little is still understood a…

  • Entrepreneurship and local economic resilience

Open Access•Cristian Gherhes, Tim Vorley et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2018

This article examines how the legacies of the past in peripheral post-industrial places serve to shape current and future entrepreneurial activity, and with it local economic resilience. Drawing on in-depth qualitative interviews with key regional stakeholders, the article reveals how peripheral post-industrial places are constrained by their histories. This is found to be manifest in different ways, such as low aspirations, generational unemploy…

  • Mobilising diaspora to promote homeland investment

    Open Access•Nick Williams•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 19

This paper examines the development of policies which seek to mobilise and maximise the potential of diaspora investment in their home countries. While a great deal of migrant entrepreneurship literature focuses on impacts in the host country, less is known about the impacts of diasporans on home countries. The paper focuses on the three post-conflict Balkan economies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Montenegro, each of which has large diasp…

  • Entrepreneurship and Social Capital

Open Access•Nick Williams, Richard Huggins et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 31

Spatial approaches to examining entrepreneurship have increasingly built on theories of social capital. However, the nature and extent of local social capital in less successful deprived communities remains under researched and inadequately understood. This article examines the association between social capital and entrepreneurship in a deprived urban neighbourhood in the city of Leeds, UK as a means of contributing to an improved theoretical un…

  • The role of civic leadership in fostering economic resilience in City Regions

    C Brooks, Tim Vorley et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Studies•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 54

This paper examines the role of civic leadership in fostering economic resilience in City Regions. Extant research on resilience has examined ‘economic’ factors. This paper adds to the academic discourse by considering how effective leadership shapes economic development within sub-national economies. Through a case study of the Sheffield City Region (SCR), UK, the paper considers the role of civic leadership in enabling Local Enterprise Partners…

  • Engaged Composition, Dehierarchisation and My Politics of Practice

    Nick Williams•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2015

All music, by its nature, is political, whether explicitly concerned with political subject matter or not. A composer's stylistic decisions, choice and treatment of material, along with who plays the music and who listens to it, are all aspects determined to a large degree by political factors. In this paper I shall explore two distinct modes of compositional practice to illustrate my position. The first mode involves the use of techniques that e…

  • Creating and sustaining a model of community-based enterprise learning

    Tim Vorley, Nick Williams•ARTICLE•Community Development•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 37

Entrepreneurship education has increased in prominence over the past decade yet somewhat paradoxically remains outside the statutory school curriculum in many places, including the UK. Despite this, there has been a growing movement to embed enterprise education widely, including supporting enterprise through community-based learning. This article is the output from a participatory action research case study which analyzes the implementation of c…

  • Habit

    Nick Williams•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2013

This paper introduces the performance project SynSite, created in collaboration with dancer and aerial artist Mona McCarthy. In this performance, a motion-tracking system monitors McCarthy's movement as she improvises. She explores an interactive audio environment, responding to sonic events as they emerge and move around her and negotiating her control over the system. The system, however, is capable of varying degrees of obstinacy and resists s…

  • Better than it sounds”

    Michael Rühle, Nick Williams•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1998

To date, plans for a comprehensive European security architecture seem to have been subordinated to the primacy of military security. The future architecture will be based more on a synergy of political processes than on a hierarchy of institutions

  • Life cycle analysis of housing

Matthew Smith, John Whitelegg et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•1997•Cited by: 1

This paper reports the findings of a project to assess the costs and benefits of adopting environment‐friendly construction practices for social rented housing in Scotland. Two contrasted dwelling specifications — one for a conventional building (the Control) and one for an environmentally responsible building (Eco‐Type 1) — are compared using Life Cycle Analysis and Life Cycle Costing methodologies. An assessment is made of the environmental and…

  • Why Nato will survive

    Michael Rühle, Nick Williams•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1997•References: 1

NATO has proven its ability to manage the fundamental tasks determining European security. However, two common misperceptions have emerged that predict its demise. The most common fallacy, that NATO must have a clear‐cut mission to survive, ignores that even during the Cold War NATO served many functions beyond deterring Soviet aggression. Another widely held misconception is that NATO must formally expand its role to engage in out‐of‐area disput…
