Assessing alexithymia in adolescents: Psychometric properties of the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire in high school students
Conceptually, alexithymia is a key transdiagnostic risk factor for the development of numerous psychopathologies across the lifespan. However, to date, most alexithymia research has focused on adults, with adolescent work limited by a lack of validated age-appropriate assessment tools.Recently, the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) was introduced to enhance the comprehensiveness of alexithymia assessments, but its psychometric properties have …
Competing worlds: The private lives of women nurse students and gender equity in higher education
A longitudinal qualitative study of undergraduate women nursing students demonstrated the profound and pervasive influence of the heterosexual intimate relationship on their university engagement and achievement. Hitherto, the importance of women’s private lives have been underappreciated in the arenas of student equity and retention. The study showed that traditional ideas of gender held within the intimate relationship were highly detrimental t…
Going-it alone: The university progression of women nursing students who are the first person in their intimate relationship to go to university
This article argues for an expansion of the idea of the first-in-family student to include the student whose spouse or partner has not been to university. Between 2015 and 2016, a qualitative longitudinal study, guided by Gadamer’s hermeneutic philosophy, was undertaken. Twenty-nine undergraduate women nursing students who began university in a heterosexual intimate relationship participated. All 29 were interviewed in their fourth semester of th…
Widening the lens on capital: Conceptualising the university experiences of non-traditional women nurse students
This article argues the insufficiency of the traditional application of cultural, social and economic capital in conceptualising the non-traditional student experience. Built on the thematic analysis of 52 in-depth interviews with 28 mature-age women nursing undergraduates with family responsibilities in Australia, an alternative, expanded model of capital is proposed. The qualitative study, underpinned by Gadamer’s Hermeneutic Philosophy, reveale…

What is alexithymia? Using factor analysis to establish its latent structure and relationship with fantasizing and emotional reactivity
OBJECTIVE: There is ongoing uncertainty about the structure and definition of alexithymia. Conceptually, alexithymia has traditionally been defined as a multidimensional trait with four components: difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, externally orientated thinking, and difficulty fantasizing. However, some authors suggest that difficulty fantasizing might not be a component, and others suggest low emotional reactivity…
Navigating Parenthood as Two Women; The Positive Aspects and Strengths of Female Same-sex Parenting
This study investigated the positive aspects of female same-sex parenting, and the strengths that these couples may exhibit. We recruited 13 female same-sex couples (n = 26) who participated in in-depth interviews, framed by a hermeneutic approach. Participants described a number of positive factors, which included negotiating a coparenting relationship in the absence of socially prescribed roles, characterized by shared, collaborative parenting.…

Lifelong Kindergarten: Cultivating Creativity through Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play
How lessons from kindergarten can help everyone develop the creative thinking skills needed to thrive in today's society. In kindergartens these days, children spend more time with math worksheets and phonics flashcards than building blocks and finger paint. Kindergarten is becoming more like the rest of school. In Lifelong Kindergarten, learning expert Mitchel Resnick argues for exactly the opposite: the rest of school (even the rest of life) sh…

Remembering, Repeating and Working Through: The Impact of the Controversial Discussions
F reud's recognition that what cannot be remembered may well be repeated in action is useful for understanding the trauma and aftermath of the Controversial Discussions. I shall be concentrating on disavowal, repeating, working through and remembering in the evolving context of the process of the impact of the Discussions. I suggest that we can distinguish three phases of the impact of the Discussions: the first a silence as if the Discussions co…

The Experiences of Indigenous Australian Psychologists at University
Disparities exist between Indigenous Australians and non‐Indigenous Australians on indicators of life expectancy, alcohol and drug use, adult and juvenile incarceration, and rates of hospitalisation for self‐harm, suicide, and mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use. Psychology is a discipline that can assist in remedying these issues, yet disparities are evident in Indigenous participation in higher education generally…
Sandor Ferenczi - Ernest Jones: Letters 1911-1933
The Ferenczi-Jones correspondence presented here is an important document of the early history of psychoanalysis. It spans more than two decades, and addresses many of the relevant issues of the psychoanalytic movement between 1911-1933, such as Freud's relation to Stekel, Adler and Jung; the First World Wa;, the debates of the 1920s regarding the theoretical and technical ideas of Rank and Ferenczi; problems of leadership, structure, and finding…

The other Climate Crisis: Digital Culture, Demography and Education
The world is facing two urgent crises. The first is the climate change crisis, a result of hundreds of years of problematic use of the planet's natural resources. The second, this article argues, is a crisis in public education, which is the result of an 'exactly parallel' misunderstanding and mismanagement of human resources. This article proposes that these crises need to be tackled together, and considers the emergence of digital cultures as p…

Brightness and octave position: Are changes in spectral envelope and in tone height perceptually equivalent
Rapid changes in spectral envelope have been reported to influence estimation of octave position by musically trained listeners. Musically trained and untrained listeners were asked to judge changes in spectral envelope as well as octave position for successively presented stimuli. Untrained listeners erroneously perceived unison intervals concurrent with a change in spectral envelope as octave intervals. Trained listeners were at ceiling perform…
