Believing in South Central: Everyday Islam in the City of Angels
The First Amendment and State Bans on Teachers' Religious Garb: Analyzing the Historic Origins of Contemporary Legal Challenges in the United States. By Nathan C. Walker
Americans remain deeply ambivalent about public expressions of religion. Many scholars presume that such uneasiness is rooted in the fundamental premise that religion is properly confined to the private realm. The public domain should be free of religious iconography. Prompted by immigration, the increasing diversity of Western societies provides additional incentive to maintain the public’s secularity, to honor the convictions of the irreligious…
Defiant Worship: Religious Liberty Talk and Rights in Covid-19 Pandemic Times
This article draws on interactive social media content collected from Facebook and Twitter during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic in order to examine responses to the public health measures that restricted indoor forms of religious assembly. Restrictions on indoor religious gatherings were challenged in courts and their constitutionality was addressed by the Supreme Court over the summer of 2020. This historic period, with lockdowns…
Shari‘a Consciousness: Law and Lived Religion among California Muslims
Shari‘a (commonly translated as Islamic law) is at the epicenter of anti-Muslim discourses in the United States. How do Muslims in the United States understand and experience shari‘a in the context of virulent attacks on it and on Islam and Muslims more generally? This article explores the meanings Californian Muslims give to and the intentions they derive from shari‘a when dominant discourses represent shari‘a as a cause for concern in American …
Women in the Mosque: A History of Legal Thought and Social Practice . By Marion Holmes Katz
What does it say about the academic study of women and Islam when the discrepancy between rules restricting women's access to mosques and historical evidence of women's unceasing presence in mosques has not been investigated until 2014? At least, that is the question raised by Marion Holmes Katz's book, Women in the Mosque: A History of Legal Thought and Social Practice . There has, until now, been a gap in our knowledge of the actual impact of r…
Pious Practices and Secular Constraints: Women in the Islamic Revival in Europe. By Jeanette S. Jouili
Pious Practices and Secular Constraints is premised on the image of a secular state under siege by Muslims who persist in religious practices that challenge Europe’s identity, including the highly public wearing of headscarves. Jeanette Jouili integrates relevant poststructuralist accounts of the anthropology of ethics with her original ethnographic work to illustrate the porous yet regulated boundary between the secular and religious worlds as w…
Muslims in the United States: Pluralism under Exceptional Circumstances
In the contemporary United States, can Muslims draw on religious authorities living in other, very different societies and to the normative ideas those authorities espouse? Or is this a challenge that cannot be tolerated by distinctively American dogmas of what constitutes a good society? The concept of pluralism, as fact and theory, is discussed in light of what the Muslim American experience has to tell us about the limits of tolerance. The idi…
Muslim Women in America: The challenge of Islamic identity today
The treatment and role of women is one of the most discussed and controversial aspects of Islam. In this volume, three scholars of Islam survey the situation of women in Islam, focusing on how Muslim views about and experiences of gender are changing in the Western diaspora. It offers an overview of the teachings of the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad on gender, analyzes the ways in which the West has historically viewed Muslim women, and examine…
