  • Rethinking Post-Tenure Malaise

    Tamara Beauboeuf-Lafontant, Tamara Beauboeuf–lafontant et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 16

The decades between tenure and retirement constitute the longest yet least understood period of a faculty member’s career. Previous research depicts the midcareer as fraught with reduced job and career satisfaction, lowered productivity, and even stagnation. However, we suggest a reframing of this period. Drawing on data from surveys and interviews of post-tenure faculty at three liberal arts institutions, we reconceptualize the post-tenure as a …

  • Feminism, First‐, Second‐, and Third‐Wave

    Open Access•Hōkūlani K Aikau, Karla A Erickson et al.•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

The history of feminism in the West is typically divided into a “first wave,” a “second wave,” and a “third wave” to describe women's involvement in social movements that brought about dramatic transformations in their access to social, political, educational, and economic opportunities from the late nineteenth century to the present. This entry critically examines the “wave” metaphor as it has been used by academics and details the major theoret…

  • Emotional Labor

    Open Access•Karla A Erickson, Karla Erickson•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2018•Referencias: 1

In 1979, Arlie Russell Hochschild developed the conceptual framework for a sociological study of emotions. She tied feeling rules, emotional display, and the demand to feign a feeling for a wage to social structure. In The Managed Heart (1983), she studied the trained management of feeling among flight attendants and bill collectors, laying the terrain to understand how workers' feelings are the terrain of struggle and site of profit in a service…

  • Knowing Death Well

    Open Access•Karla A Erickson•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2017•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 50

End-of-life workers, regardless of occupational status, work against a transformed culture of death and dying. Against that backdrop of technological brinkmanship, segregation of aging and dying from other aspects of life, and a cultural denial of death's inevitability, end-of-life workers develop competence and expertise; however, that competence varies, shaped by the training and occupational status of its purveyors. Based on three years of par…

On the basis of analysis of student responses to a case study titled “Drinks and Dinner,” the authors evaluate the pedagogical potential of using constructive controversy case studies to teach about inequality. “Drinks and Dinner” is designed to capture the complexity of social interactions that defy simple solutions to engage students in increasingly sophisticated discussions of subtle gender bias and the practical contingencies of power in the …
