  • Porn tourism

    Crystal A Jackson•ARTICLE•Porn Studies•2020•References: 11

Where does ‘porn tourism’ situate within the ‘the charmed circle of sexuality’? If porn tourism is to be conceptualized, it will fall under the umbrella of sex tourism. But should it be developed as a concept in its own right? Or would that reify deviance and create a hierarchy of ‘appropriate’ tourism? Issues such as place, distance, difference (travelling between the Global South and Global North), and consumption are important to assess. But d…

  • Consent and Sexualized Leisure in Sin City

    Crystal A Jackson, Paul J Maginn et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2020•References: 26

This article deploys a sexualized leisure framework to analyze the management of consent at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE), one of the largest and longest running conventions in the mainstream U.S. porn industry. Drawing on field observations in this naturalistic setting and observers post-Expo reflections, we explore the complexities of consent in a porn tourism scene. We corroborate our qualitative analysis with survey findings (n = 433…

  • Sex Workers Unite!”

    Crystal A Jackson•ARTICLE•Women's studies quarterly•2019

This article analyzes how sex worker support networks exist at a nexus of support, friendship, and assistance for current and former sex workers, stemming from participation at the Desiree Alliance conference in 2010. During the conference, current and former sex workers engaged in peer-to-peer education on a range of issues and continued to support one another after the conference in ways that value both well-being and work. As social nodes of r…

  • Sexual Satisfaction in Monogamous, Nonmonogamous, and Unpartnered Sexual Minority Women in the US

Adrienne Baldwin, Debby Herbenick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Research on sexual satisfaction tends to focus mostly on heterosexual women and women in monogamous relationships. Sexual satisfaction among sexual minority women and women who are nonmonogamous or not partnered is under-researched. Through an online survey, we gathered data from 334 cisgender sexual minority women in various relationship configurations and assessed sexual satisfaction in relation to individual and interpersonal factors. Sexual s…

  • Expo sing Men's Gender Role Attitudes as Porn Superfans

    Open Access•Crystal A Jackson, Adrienne Baldwin et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Much contemporary debate about pornography centers on its role in portraying and perpetuating gender inequality. This article compares traditional gendered attitudes between cisgender men attending the Adult Entertainment Expo (n = 294) and a random sample of male respondents from the 2016 General Social Survey ( GSS ), a U.S. representative survey of general attitudes and beliefs collected every two years (n = 863). Our survey borrowed questions…

  • Mobile Orientations

    Open Access•Crystal Jackson, Crystal A Jackson•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2019

Mobile Orientations: An Intimate Autoethnography of Migration, Sex Work, and Humanitarian Borders sits in the emerging traditions of critical trafficking studies and sex work ethnographies. Yet this book is, at its core, a book about migration, “sex/gendered regimes,” and Global North neoliberal governmentality, not a book on sex work per se. In service of new concepts that support his larger theory of “sexual humanitarianism,” author Nicola Mai …

  • Porn fans as sex tourists? Broadening meanings of sexual consumption among adult entertainment expo attendees in Las Vegas, Nevada

    Crystal A Jackson, Daniel Sahl et al.•ARTICLE•Porn Studies•2018•References: 23

This article centralizes the importance of studying touristic aspects of ‘porn cultures’ and expanding the meanings of ‘sex tourism’ to include porn culture. We do so by drawing from a survey of 481 individuals attending the 2009 Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, NV, USA. Using multivariate analyses and logistic regression, we examine how two dimensions of a relationship – relationship status (monogamous, open, or single) and travelling with…

Open Access•Rosemary Barberet, Crystal Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Papers Revista de Sociologia•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 7

In 2010, the United Nations adopted the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-Custodial Measures for Women Offenders (the "Bangkok Rules"). This was a landmark step in adapting the 1955 Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners to women offenders and prisoners, and was an important precursor for the revision of the 1955 rules themselves. As 'soft law', they are human rights principles that recognize that fe…

  • Framing Sex Worker Rights

    Open Access•Crystal A Jackson•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 39

This article examines how U.S. sex worker rights activists articulate 'rights-based frames' to counter mainstream 'victim frames' that conflate sex work and sex trafficking. Drawing on interviews with 19 U.S. sex worker rights activists conducted between 2010 and 2012, and participant observation of a national sex worker rights conference in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2010, I illustrate how activists create sex worker rights frames that (1) contest the…

  • Revealing contemporary constructions of femininity

    Open Access•Crystal A Jackson•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2011

This case study of Las Vegas strip club business laws explores the construction of feminine sexuality in legal discourse. Grounding textual analysis in contemporary sexuality theories, the article explores expression-based regulations that construct erotic dance as detrimental to social welfare and health, and other laws that normalize erotic dance labor as the sale of desire. I argue that expression-based ordinances stigmatize public displays of…

  • The State of Sex

Barbara G Brents, Barbara Brents et al.•BOOK•The state of sex•2009

The State of Sex is a study of Nevada’s brothels that situates the nation's only legal brothel industry in the political economy of contemporary tourism. Nevada is part of the "new American heartland," as its pastimes, people, and politics have become more central to the nation. The rise of a service and leisure economy over the past sixty years has propelled sexuality into the heart of contemporary markets. Yet, neoliberal laws in the United Sta…

In the last issue of the NWSA Journal (Summer 2005), Lois Helmbold offered an account of her experiences as chair of the Studies Department at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in, Women's Studies in Sin City: Reactionary Politics and Feminist Possibilities. Three years as the head of the department have given Helmbold a point of view that is different from our own as members of the wider Studies community at UNLV. We have a close communi…
